Personality & Traits

General Overview Growing up with a father who was an adamant Klingon warrior, Zara grew up knowing much of Klingon culture and also knowing what "honor" really meant. She held on to that teaching for most of her life and it truly shaped how she saw things. As she has aged throughout the years and gotten wiser and seen several different worlds and cultures and studied them, she still holds on to what her father taught her about "honor," but she also is very open-minded and considerate of other people.

Zara is a hard worker, and she loves her jobs, and she loves being a mentor for younger people, especially Starfleet cadets. She is very big about helping other people, which comes from her Human side, but it is a part of a new form of "honor" that she has learned on her way by becoming more well-versed in her field as a science officer.

Personal History Zara was born on Qo'noS in 2340. She was born to a Klingon father and human mother. Her father, Ra’Mar was a commander in the House of Kr'Chakik. Zara was born right in the middle of her father being out in space and her father died in a battle in 2342, two years after she was born. It was her mother, Arianna who told Zara the narrative of her brave father and how he died in battle fighting for the Klingon Empire and was now living in Sto'Vo'Kor. She fell in love with her father purely from the stories that her mother told her. Eventually, when Zara and her brother were old enough, they both wanted to start their lives. Her brother, Rakar, wanted to be just like his father, fighting and dying for the Klingon Empire in battle, but Zara wanted to be involved in the sciences.

While her brother joined the Klingon Defense Force, Zara attended the Science Institute on Mempa V in 2358 to study science. Zara’s superiors wanted her to study astrophysics to help aid in building weapons for the Klingon Defense Force, but she wanted to study culture and societies. She got around her “weapons creation” duties by informing her professors she was studying “the sociology of war,” which would help aid them in battle. For the most part, her professors believed her. In 2362 she graduated from the Institute and set off to be a “scientist.”

In 2363 Zara wrote her first book, 'IHI'Ijqu'!: mach tlhIngan tej paq (in English: Listen to Me!: A Klingon Scientist Manifesto) which was a memoir/autobiographical work about her life as a Klingon scientist and all that she had endured on her year-long journey on Qo’noS and aboard the SS Zenith—a civilian science vessel—learning about different aliens and cultures and societies. She later enrolled at the Felker Institute that year to earn a Ph.D. in sociology, which lasted from 2363 to 2368. During her time at the Institute, she worked part-time as a political commentator for the Federation News Service, reporting on the Borg Invasion and Battle of Wolf 359.

Zara enrolled at Starfleet Academy in 2368, majoring in Anthropology/Archaeology. While taking courses at Starfleet Academy, she published her second book veS: tlhIngan Dev nugh HaD (in English: War: The Klingon Guide to Studying Society) in 2371. She graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2372. In 2372, she was appointed as a Science Instructor at the Daystrom Institute.  At the Institute she taught courses such as “the sociology of space,” “Klingon love poetry,” and “intergalactic crime.” She gained a reputation though from her annual “war and politics” course which several students complained about her being a “ruthless professor” and treating her students like “Klingon warriors in training.”

While at the Daystrom Institute, she served as a mission specialist for many occasions that required expertise: In 2372 she aided in developing the ceasefire for the Federation-Klingon War. In 2372, she also provided regular political analysis on the Maquis. In 2373, she assisted Starfleet Intelligence with counter-terrorism measures against the Cardassians.

In 2374, her superiors recommended her for a sabbatical at the Daystrom Institute to serve aboard a Federation ship to gain additional experience.
