The Mentarin Effect
Location: Science Lab

"Jury-rigged?" Vanessa asked. "That's basically what we're doing. Combining a probe with a transporter buffer and a chemical we seed into the atmosphere. The jewelry makes it easier to lock on to the people being transported. If you have something better, we'd love to hear it." She was repeating herself. Again. She moved closer to Tully, not sure if she wanted to give him support, or get it.

"Which is all very good!" Amelix replied happily. "With the time constraints, I don't think I could do any better. Um, oh, unless we built in some other redundancies, so rather than having one probe, we have a string of them that act like one of those old fashioned telephone pole things that I saw in some Terran archive. Each one acts as another signal buffer."
This was definitely a question for Tully, and Vanessa turned to him with a twinkle in her eye to await his response.
"Do you think we have enough time?" he said looking at Amelix. "I mean I can drink a few mugs of raktajino and be good for a while. It may help me catch up to your speed of thinking. My mom always used to hide the sugar from me as a kid."
Amelix laughed. "Oh, you'll get used to it! Everyone always does! I mean, you don't want to see me on rakajino, though! Really, you don't! But yes, I think we have enough time! Replicators are wonderful things!"
"I'm game for it if you ladies both are," Tully said with a smile. Though he looked at Amelix for a moment. "I'm sorry. It is lady? I don't know your species all that well and I didn't ask your pronouns."
"It is lady!" Amelix replied with hissing laughter. "I'm most definitely a female! I don't think that Tygarians are compatible with Terrans but Terrans seem so compatible with so many different species...." She thought for a moment and said, "I think I'm going to have to set up some experiments on that! It certainly would be interesting to see if a Terran could cross breed with a Tygarian. I mean, they can do it with Betazoids and Vulcans.... Then again, there is the issue that you're primate based and we're something closer to your reptiles. Still, I really should look into it. It would be a fascinating set of experiments. You would not happen to want to donate some of your DNA, would you?" Amelix's eyes and head glistened in Tully's direction.
Tully shrugged his shoulders. "Not the craziest first encounter with the third kind I've had," replied Tully. "So, how do you wanna go about getting it? I mean are we talking a little mouth opening and cheek swab or are ya gonna take me out for coffee and cannoli first?"
"Coffee and cannoli would pollute the samples! We couldn't have that!" the Tygarian retorted. "So, cheek swab it is! After that, I will have to see what the results yield and then that will tell me what further tests are required!"
"Sounds fine to me," replied Tully with a small smile.
"I have nothing else pressing," Vanessa said, responding to Tully's question. "But I may need to work off some energy on the holodeck afterwards."
Tully began to tap his foot against the decking and beatbox the rhythm of an Earth tune from the mid 20th century. Humming along he started to sing out some lyrics "Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk I'm a woman's man, no time to talk..." he looked up at the two women and blushed. "Hells yeah roller disco, Nessa," he added enthusiastically.
She giggled. "Just be gentle, I'm the novice here." Her grin made it clear that she, too, was excited about the prospect.
Amelix looked between Tully and Vanessa, somewhat confused as to what was going on. She then had an epiphany and asked, "Are you two in a relationship?! That is so exciting if you are. If you're not, well, maybe you should be?! I really don't want to interfere in any of that but I do want to know EVERYTHING!"
Vanessa blushed.
"Aw shucks," Tully replied. He took was blushing. "I hadn't really thought about that sort of thing. The two of you are officers... like academy graduates, and I'm not. I'm just me ya know?" Tully looked at Amelix and then at Vanessa.
Amelix looked at Vanessa. "He's not possessed or hasn't been possessed by any alien species recently has he? I mean, who else could he be but him? And what does being officers have to do with anything?"
"Being a non-com means nothing, as far as I'm concerned," Vanessa said, shrugging. "We're going dancing. As he said, he's not interested in anything else--and no, he hasn't been possessed, as far as I can tell."
"Well, that's HIS loss!" Amelix concluded. "From my observations of females of the Terran and Betazoids in terms of the males desires, I would say that you're well above average in desirability and appearance, Lieutenant Jackson. Perhaps your face is a little squarer than most males desire but in my experiments and observations, males tend to look at those things on a tertiary basis. On a scale of 13, I'd say you're a solid 11."
"Thank you...I think," the half-Betazoid said. She wasn't going to comment on whether or not it was Tully's loss--or what she thought about it. Vanessa didn't want to put him off as a dance partner.
Tully just shrugged. "It is what it is. Let's go dancing, Nessa" he said wanting to squirm away before Amelix submitted either one of them to any more questioning.
Tully's feelings were clear to the half-Betazoid. She smiled at him before turning to Amelix. "I think we're done for now." She turned her smile to Amelix. "If you don't mind, I did promise Tully we'd go dancing."
"Oh, no! I don't mind at all! I'll let you two 'dance,' she said with a knowing wink at both of them. Just make sure that you're not too worn out for your next shift! There's science to be done! Lots of experiments I've got in mind!"
Vanessa felt her cheeks warm again. "Yes, ma'am." She grabbed Tully by the hand, not caring if he objected or not, and hurried out of the lab.
