Meeting the new boss

Mission:
The Lost Brother
Location: Security Offices
Timeline: Current
Tal had just gotten out of sickbay for her check up after the incident, and although she had been told to go home, her contrariness came out, and she went to her shift instead. Walking in to the security offices, she went to the weapons case and opened it up.
"Hello Lieutenant; Soran Wagnor. He offered her his hand, "I'm the new Security Chief.
Looking down to the new officer, "Lt Talsi Carey." She accepted his hand. 'Nice to meet you Commander. I hope you don't mind, but I was planning on recalibrating these rifles today."
"I see I didn't see these on on the maintenance schedule." Soran said.
"Its not on the schedule, just something I do."
"I see, you've upgraded to the compression rifles." Soran. picked up one of the rifles. "My last ship had just switched before my transfer, so I'm still acquainting myself with these."
Tal nodded. "Its a bit... ancient compared to my peoples. But it does the trick."
I'm not concerned about having the most sophisticated tech. I just want something reliable, the real weapon is the sentient mind. He mused.
"Its also the most reliable i have found since arriving in federation space."
"There good rifles," he agreed.
He was unfamiliar with her species, but he wasn't in the habit of asking intrusive questions.
"If you don't like that weaapon, there are these other two." She picked up one with her other hand, then untucked her tail, and grabbing the another. "Any questions?"
He shook his head. "I just wish the federation would produce a good carbine. I put a custom stock on my personal rifle, but when you shorten the barrel it screws up the heat regular. I don't fancy burning my face off with my own rifle in the middle of a firefight."
"Just a moment, follow me...." Walking over she opened her personal stock... several weapons lay before... one was a carbine, she and Xavier had developed. Which was still being discussed and tested. "Something like this."
Soran grinned, "that more like it."
He picked it up the weapon the weight was right, "have solved the heat problem?"
"We had plenty of time to work it out... took eight months, and several redesigns. But we got it." She grabbed several more. "Heres some more, they are yours if you want."
"Yes,"he smiled warmly. "It's been years since I've had a good carbine. "
"f you need more, the designs are in the security replicator."
"One will for the moment I'll want to acquaint myself with this before I issue it to security teams. This is similar to the type my people used. " He explained.
"It is my prefered weapon of choice, if you have objections of me using it on missions, I would gladly use the others available."
"I have no objection," he smiled. "This similar to what I'm used to."
"Very well, do you have any questions about myself. People usually do, and I don't object."
"Fair enough," Soran said, looking up at her. "I don't believe I've ever encountered anyone quite like you before. We're are you from?"
"Na'avi... From about 100,000 years ago. Woke up several years ago in stasis."
"Are there any more of you?" He inquired.
"I was placed in stasis so I am not sure, there could be, but they had a 100,000 years to change relocate, you name it, they could be anywhere in the universe if they avoided the containment field that we placed around our space."
"I left my people by choice," Soran said thoughtfully. "Can't imagine being separated that way."
"The Captain and I have a have a kid in starfleet but thats about it."
He smiled and nodded and picked up a PADD. "I see we have a number of personnel who's phaser certifications are about to expire. "May I assign chasing these people down to you? I'll handle the department heads, I need to get Acquainted with them anyway."
The door opened and a young man stepped in carrying a long rifle case and walked in the room. "Hello Sir, Ma"am.
Soran smiled. "Hey CJ, I suppose That rifle has a female name?"
"Yes sir, her name is Josephine." The man flashed a boyish grin as Soran rolled his eyes.
He looked up at Talsi, extending a hand "Lieutenant Carey I presume."
"CJ... is that Lt, or ensign."
"Lieutenant junior grade Ma'am, Caleb J Boucher." The man responded in a southern drill. "Folks call me CJ."
Tal looked at him... then to the chief. "Is this the one you concussed." She inquired she had talked to her husband and he had explained about sparring.
"Well Ma'am that sparring mishap happened on the Lister and its water under the bridge. I'm fully recovered and have been medically cleared."He laughed. "Takes a bit more than a bump on the head to Boucher out of commission."
"So it does. So question, why name a weapon?"
"It's an old Earth tradition that my ancestors and I have been observing for about 500 years. My ancestors made their way living off the land, well it was more swamp than land. You'd need your rifle for food and protection, my granddaddy always said treat your rifle like a lady and she'll never let you down. Now my kin have changed planets, but we still live in a swamp, so we still treat our rifles right." CJ explained.
"I don't get it either," Soran smiled.
She looked at the weapon in her hands. "So... this weapon is Josephine?"
"Yes Ma'am, this beautiful lady has been with me my since sharp shooter training at the Academy. We've been through quite a lot together." CJ chuckled.
"So, all weapons are called Josephine?
Soran looked Talsi he wasn't sure if she was asking a serious question or was messing with CJ. Either way he was planning to enjoy the show.
"Oh no ma'am you misunderstand me," CJ said. "This rifle is named Josephine, rifles in general are nameless until someone decides to christen them."
A look of confusion came on her face... "Doesn't christening happen in a church... I thought most religion sought peace, and against weapons."
"Christening in its broader definition just means to give something a name," CJ said patiently. "This vessel for instance was christened the Resolution."
Thinking about it. "Wouldn't that be the same as calling, that chair over there, Bob. That door, george?"
Now Soran couldn't hold back a chuckle watching Talsi's interaction with CJ. "I think she has a point there."
"You are technically correct however in however in most cultures names are given to objects that have meaning to the individual that christening." CJ explained. To me one door doesn't have much more meaning than another and a chair is just a chair. This rifle has allowed me to survive and protect my comrades more times than I can count. I can take her apart and put her back together black blindfolded and I know every inch of her. She is perfectly calibrated to me."
Not knowing what else to say, she turned to the weapon. "Nice to meet you Josephine." It was merely a joke.
CJ smiled and placed the rifle on the table, he began pulling out the maintenance tools. "I just have to make sure everything's all right after the trip here."
"Let me know if you need help... ill just go through george and sit on bob."
Soran guffawed and clapped Boucher on the shoulder. "I think she just busted your chops there."
CJ smiled and turned to the work at hand.
