Mission:
The Lost Brother
Location: Holodeck
Soran sat on a bench in the park and began to feed bread crumbs to the waterfowl that had gathered by the edge of the pond. He smiled at the birds as they fought over the food, this was one of his favorite holodeck programs. He often used this to calm his nerves.
"I would not think you would come up with a holodeck program like this. So calm,.... so boring." Melor had come unto the deck. He was still walking with difficulty but he was so much better off than his stepbrother.
"I guess, I'm a far more complicated man than you seem to think." Soran said. "This is park I used send a lot time as a youth. Please keep your voice down I don't want you to frighten the birds, I assume you wanted to speak me."
"Can't a man just want to catch up with an old friend." With some difficulty he lowered himself to the floor. "Those bastards were a little too efficient."
"I guess not," he smiled. "How are you feeling?"
"Shaky. They already sent a shrink to see me. Well you know all about that." He sighed. "That is not so easy for my klingon side."
"I can imagine," he sighed. "Lt Jensen is good. She's been able to help me."
"I thought Tony fixed you years ago.'
"Fixed is an oversimplification, I relapsed." Soran said. "I should probably tell you I'm dating Tony."
Melor snorted. "Oh man! Wait is this for real? I always knew you were atracked to each other. Tony has been in love with you for a while now I think. But she really is not trying to treat you?"
"Yes this real," He smiled. "I've already been grilled by her mother so we can skip that part."
"If you survived the interview with aunt Aleck you are in." He grinned. "You know uncle Richard is a push over, as long as Tony is happy that is."
"I hope l can make her happy," Soran nodded.
"I think you can. If you really love her that is. Tony doesn't love easily." He warned.
"I know," he smiled. "She's one of the few people who who got threw wall, I like to I've done the same. "
"Yeah she is a good one." Melor agreed.
"It's hard to get close to other people," Soran said.
He threw a handful of crumbs to the birds, "For some reason completely unknown to me I have survived many battles and watched many people better than me parish."
"That's bullshit. You are a good man." Melor said. "I on the other hand..." He went silent watching the water.
"What?"
"I bring nothing but misery to those close to me." Melor sighed.
"We both know that's not true."
He sighed. "If my grandfather had not stood for peace and if he had not befriended Owain London all these years ago none of this would have happened."
"You are not responsible for your grandfather's actions," Soran said softly.
"I know. But some days it is easier to accept the legacy then others. They did a lot of good as well. It's hard when it involves others."
"I know the feeling," he smiled.
"I know you do. I have been talking to this shrink. She is nice enough but most of them don't really get it. My stepmum does, and Tony does for the most part."
"Sometimes I think I'm a fucking curse, people who get close to me die. The people around me don't seem to realize and won't leave me be."
"yeah got you there. My mother died while saving my life when I was a toddler."
He put a hand on the man's shoulder. "At least a loving family took you in I spent my childhood a ward of the state. The orphanage I grew up in is a few kilometers from here, I became a rather skilled pickpocket. This park was my favorite place. I never bothered the people feeding the birds they always had an extra sandwich for me."
"Oh man. That is ... yes Wain and Denise always treated me like I was one of their own and they gave me a lot of love."
"The staff of the orphanage I'm sure did their best and I spent a small amount of time in the foster home." Soran chuckled, I guess a ten year old looking climb security fences and pick locks percentage quite the challenge. That's probably why I was chosen for the Security Force Academy."
"Yeah it must be. But then as an adult uncle Richard and aunt Aleck really took you under their wing, didn't they? You feel like part of their family."
"Yes, it's aways felt a little strange." Soran nodded.
"They love you. Both those families love taking in strays. But they don't do it often, and if they do they love with their whole hearts. You have to believe that. I think even the old man respects you."
"I guess I don't feel worthy of love," he sighed.
"Why not? We must be. They have taken us in, they selected us. THere must be something about us." Melor chuckled.
"Sometimes I'm not sure they're right in the head." Soran smiled.
"Nope." Melor smiled. "But I love them anyway."
"Me too."
