Mission:
Lantea
Location: counselling office
Kay stuck her head round Sky's door. "Hi boss. Have I told you how happy I am you are back?" She grinned. "I did the best I could and thankfully some people were on shoreleave. And Tony helped when she was around. How are you doing?"
“Hi Kay, I’m fine thank you.” Sky smiled from where she sat surrounded by PADDs, feet up on a comfy stool, and with a comfy cushion behind her back. “Come sit down, I wanted to say how much I appreciate what you’ve done. You've handled the department admirably while I’ve been away, and I’m still going to need you.”
"It was nothing." Kay blushed. "Like I said a lot of people were away on shore leave. And I guess Tony will be a big help now. You heard the captain, she can help out."
“Tony has her primary duty as First Officer, which means she’ll only be available when absolutely necessary.” Sky offered a smile. “It’s our department, I know it’s not exactly perfect with my being on maternity hours, then it’ll be maternity leave, but we’ll manage between us. I was always worried I’d lose my position as Chief but I’m glad I didn’t.”
"I knew you would be back and I like working with you." Kay admitted. "Ehrm just one thing. I kind of spoke to that visiting shrink once. Did she update my file?"
Sky gave Kay a curious look. “If she did I haven’t gotten to your file yet” She motioned to the pile of files she was reading through. “Are you willing to tell me about it?”
"I uhm, I was hoping you could delete it without looking." Kay blushed. "I eh I wasn't feeling my best then and I told her some things that I don't want anyone to know really."
Sky nodded. “As much as I understand Kay, it would be against the rules to delete entries from a session I’m afraid. Trust me, of late I’ve said things that I never thought I’d ever say.”
"I am sure you won't like me anymore if you read her notes." Kay whispered. "I was stupid, I don't know what came over me. Please ma'am."
“Nonsense Kay” Sky shook her head. “Tell me about it, what was so bad? It can’t be any worse than what cane out at my counselling sessions with Tony.”
"It is. It so is." Kay looked ready to bolt.
“Kay...” Sky offered a friendly gaze. “You can talk to me, hell after all my time off this past few months it’ll feel good to be doing my job again. Sit down and talk to me.”
Her knees were about to give out. "Even Tony does not know this. She can't know she would despise me."
“Anything you say to me is strictly private, that I promise you” Sky offered an understanding smile.
"You can't promise that because you know you have to break trust if it is a criminal offense."
Sky gave Kay a worried look. “Have you done something that’s that bad?”
"Yes. That's why I want you to delete it. I ... thought I was ready to face it but I really don't want to. I don't want to lose everyone's respect."
“Alright...” Sky nodded. “But since altering records would risk my career I’d like to know exactly what has you so scared.”
"You will hate me once you know. Everyone will. My family will probably never want to see me again. It's that big."
Sky gave Kay a concerned look. “Just tell me Kay, let me be the judge of that.”
Kay really looked scared to death. "Why don't you just forget I said anything?” With that she sprang to her feet and made for the door.
“Kay...stop, please.” Sky would have rushed after her but getting up too quickly tended to make her head spin thanks to being as far into her pregnancy as she was.
Kay hesitated at the door. Everything in her told her to run but Sky’s voice kept her standing for now.
“You tell me, and I’ll tell you something” Sky’s voice conveyed something that said she had a secret too that maybe she hadn’t told anyone.
“You’ll hate me.” Kay said softly. “Is it worth that, you knowing?”
“How can I ignore it now you’ve said about it?” Sky looked at Kay curiously.
“As a friend. Just delete it without reading it.” Kay pleaded.
Sky sighed and nodded. “I guess I have little choice.”
“You will?” Kay could not believe her ears.
Sky nodded. “Let’s just hope neither of us ends up regretting it.”
“I…I don’t know how to thank you, ma’am. You won’t I kept this a secret since I was five.” She flushed. Damn that was not something she had wanted to say.
Sky gave Kay a curious look but didn’t enquire any further. “Then perhaps one day you will talk to me about it.”
"Thank You ma’am.” Kay said vey relieved. “I won’t forget this.”
Sky nodded. “I guess I can understand your fears Kay, I’ll do what I can and hopefully there won’t be any issues.”
“Thank you so much ma’am.” With that she left.
Sky could only watch Kay go, wondering whether to read the counselling session on file before deleting it. Sighing she pulled up Kay’s session records, choosing the session in question she chose the option to delete it before it got officially added to the permanent records. That done she turned her attention back to Kay’s personnel file to see if she could work it out for herself.
Looking through Sky paused at a section regarding Kay’s childhood, reading the section to herself.
“When Kay was young her house was bombed and her 18 month old sister was killed. Kay was severely wounded and spent months in hospital.” She paused. “I wonder...”
