new staff finally

Posted on Fri Oct 23rd, 2026 @ 12:18am by Captain Antonia 'Tony" Stoffels & Lieutenant Morgan Stone

Mission: The Next Watch
Location: Ready room

While sipping from her tea Toni finally had time to go through the files of the new officers. She was very glad that starfleet had finally sent her some new people. Her department heads had been doing too much overtime filling all the gaps, and science had even been run by a petty officer. So far she liked what she saw and hoped that they would make a good addition to the crew and more important would stick along for a while.

Now she waited for the new chief of tactical to come by for his coming on board chat with the captain.

Having recently arrived by shuttle. Morgan and Callie found their quarters and were able to spend a little time together before he had received a message asking him to come to the Captain's Ready Room. Now, moments later he stood outside the ready room, his hand hovering over the chime. He straightened his tunic and wiped invisible dust from his uniform. Then taking a breath, his finger stabbed the chime and he waited for admittance.

"Come in!" Toni came to her feet and walked toward the new officer to be more welcoming. She held out her hand. "Welcome on board, lieutenant." She said with a smile. Then she gestured over to a section with some easy chairs. "Something to drink?"

Hearing the invitation to come in Morgan entered. He moved with confidence to the captain his own hand extended to clasp hers in a firm handshake. he moved to the chairs. He had thought of asking for a milkshake but considering who he was meeting he let the thought slip away. "No thank you Captain."

Toni sat down opposite him declining to get something to drink for herself if she was the only one getting something. Weird this was the first senior officer coming on board since she had been captain. "Are you managing to settle in ok?"

"Moving always brings challenges but yes we are settling in. Thank you for asking captain." Morgan replied with a smile.

"I am very glad that your wife is a science officer." Toni said honestly. "We can certainly use some help in that department. And you must be very happy for a chance to serve together for once."

"You have a good one in Callie." Morgan replied. "She knows her stuff." He said proudly. "I'm thrilled Captain. To have Callie here with me is a dream come true. We're going to enjoy the time we have together."

Toni smiled back. "The resolution is pretty family friendly but if there is anything you find lacking, please don't hesitate to come and see me. That goes for anything why you and your wife settle in. I came up through counselling so I do like to keep an eye out for the mental wellbeing of staff."

"That is good to know and hear." Morgan replied. "Makes working conditions so much more pleasant." He smiled, "Thank you captain for your offer, I think we're okay but I'll pass on what you said to Callie." He nodded always good to jeep an eye on the crews mental health." He agreed.

She nodded. "I will hope to have a chat with her soon as well. It's been rather busy the last couple of weeks." She admitted. "We have been understaffed in most departments."

"Whenever you are ready Captain, Callie will be ready." Morgan replied. "As for being understaffed. It isn't much but you have two new officers to assist you and that is a beginning."

"Yes it will help a great deal." Toni admitted. "We will be starting drills back up again soon so we all get to know each other and work as a unit. In these uncertain times you can't be too careful. Now do you need a tour of the ship or prefer to wander around on your own?"

"True enough Captain." Morgan replied. "A guided tour is always nice. I can always wander around by myself later if I need do."

"Well let's go. I have some time now." It would be good to stretch her legs, she had been doing paperwork for hours now.

Morgan rose fluidly to stand alongside the captain. He swept his hand in front of him, "After you sir. or do you prefer ma'am?"

"Ma'am actually if you don't mind. I am a woman and proud of it."

Morgan shook his head, "I don't mind at all ma'am. After all we are talking about the proper form of address and it should be what you are comfortable with.""

"Great. And off duty we are a pretty informal bunch here."

Good to know. I shall keep that in mind." Morgan answered as the exited the Ready Room.

"So what do you want to see first?" Toni asked.

The bridge if you don't mind. I'd like to see the tactical display." Morgan answered.

"Of course. Now I can't tell you too much about it, not being a tactical officer myself." She smiled as they walked onto the bridge and she waved the officer in command of the bridge down letting him know this was a social call.

"It is fine captain. I wanted to see the tactical display. I may wish to rearrange the console. Would that be alright?" Morgan asked.

"I would discuss it with your tactical staff before you do anything, but it is fine by me." She was a firm believer to let her officers run their departments as they saw fit as they were the experts.

Morgan nodded, "That's a given Captain. I always try to get opinions from my department. It helps to keep them involved."

"Good. So do you want to sit here for a while or continue the tour?"

"I imagine I will have plenty of opportunities to sit here so, let's continue the tour." Morgan replied.

"What do you want to see next?" She asked. "You have found your quarters already right?"

Morgan grinned broadly, "Oh yes. Callie was quite adamant we find our quarters before doing anything else."

Toni snorted a little. "I bet. I can show you the recreational decks if you like. We aim for a happy crew here."

"I would love to see the recreational decks and what they have to offer." Morgan answered with a smile.

"Let's go then."

The next half hour she led him through the recreation decks and told him also of all she wanted to achieve to make time off better for the crew.
