The Maquis Experience

Diana Morrison stepped aboard the USS Resolution that had docked in the Starbase a few hours prior. When left this ship a year ago, it was with the love her life Tony. Now she returned back to the ship alone, not knowing if Tony was dead or somehow had survived. The assignment they both expected was to infiltrate the Maquis and deliver as much information back to Starfleet as possible. One of the things that made her take on that assignment was a of professional nature. She had heard the reasons through rumors on why many the Maquis left Starfleet and even the Federation. But those were always surface answers. Nothing personal, just surface level responses. But her curiosity pushes her into wanting to know more, but this enemy of the Federation and the Cardassian Empire.

During her time with the Maquis, Diana spent time counseling the civilians, if anyone was really a civilian and the soldiers. Getting to know them over the past year. There were so many reasons that they joined. Some sought out glory and to make a name for themselves. For others they felt the Federation abandoned colonist to a ruthless enemy. Even though those colonists refused to leave when the treaty was signed. For many it was their homes and they felt whey leave because the Federation signed over their world. Maquis members who once served in Starfleet handed over their uniforms due to guilt of being a part of an organization who would leave their own citizens in the hands of a ruthless enemy. Some of those former Starfleet personnel, simply hated the Cardassians due to their experiences with them during the war and was looking for a fight. Regardless it made for a very interesting case study that she wrote and hoped one day would have the opportunity to publish.

The most interesting part of the experience was watching the Cardassian government struggle with the Maquis threat. Bu then there were reports from intelligence of the Cardassians possibly joining forces with the Dominion. Nothing serious but rumors. Diana was ordered to pull out of the assignment and return back to Federation space. Tony on the other hand was assignment on a Maquis raider. Leaving wasn't going to be so easy for him. A few days after getting back to DS9, those rumors became a huge reality. Many of the Maquis were wiped out a few days. Out of the colonies and ships belonging to the Maquis. Tony Johnson was among those gone. Starfleet had plans on retrieving any possible survivors, but the Dominion were very thorough with their extermination tactics.

As worried as she was, if anyone could have survived this onslaught, it was Tony. But to be behind enemy lines over the last few days or somewhere near it was just as dangerous. The counselor took a deep breath and simply hoped that Tony would return to her soon. In the meantime, Diana would throw herself back into her work here on the Resolution. It would be good reconnecting with old friends which would help get her mind off of how bad things were at the moment.
