Captain's Ready Room
Tony had spent a day on the ship and had yet to meet with Captain. Stepping out the turbolift, the Commander quickly made his way to the ready room. He gave himself a quickly look over before pressing the chime and waited to be called in.
"Enter," Leonard called out to the door.
Entering the room, Tony walked up the desk and stood at attention. "Lieutenant Commander Tony Johnson reporting for duty Sir."
Leonard stood to greet his officer, "at ease, 'Commander." He extended his hand to shake the Security Officer's. When their hands parted, he gestured to a chair opposite, offering Johnson a seat. He sat down again, "welcome aboard, Mr Johnson. How are you finding the ship so far?"
Sitting in the seat, he couldn't help but to smile. "Its a very fine ship and definitely large. Looking forward to participating in a couple of activities offered here."
"I'm glad to hear it 'Commander," Leonard replied. "I hope that we can offer you plenty of opportunities do so." Matt leaned back slightly in his chair. "Are you glad to be back working in Security, Mr Johnson?" The Captain had reviewed his record, of course, and whilst he knew that the 'Commander had spent virtually his entire career as a Security Officer, he had also undertaken additional training recently and taken on duties as an Operations Officer.
"Security will always be my first love," Tony admitted. "But I thought adding some diversity to my resume would do some good. My eventual goal is to one day have a command of my own."
Matt nodded. He most certainly concurred. "I would tend to agree that all Starfleet Officer's have that goal in mind 'Commander. I find myself fortunate to be in this position, given my own background."
"Sounds like you have some stories to share," the Commander chuckled.
"You could say that," Leonard replied. "My route to Command is certainly non-traditional." He shuffled in his seat, getting more comfortable. "I started my career as an enlisted man, working my way up for a long time until I became a CPO. The ship that I served on was attacked, and the ships senior Security teams were amongst the casualties. I was more surprised than most when the Captain selected me to lead the ships security department over some of the junior officer's. He gave me a battlefield commission to Lieutenant."
"I don't think that I really expected to go very far until it was made official," the Captain continued. "And I certainly didn't expect to end up in the hotseat. After nearly 20 years as a Captain though, I can't imagine not doing this job."
"So Command was never your plan initially? Funny how life and circumstance steered you in this direction. Some would say this was your destiny."
The Captain shook his head, "I'm not sure that I personally put any stock in destiny, 'Commander." He shrugged then, before saying, "I'd prefer to think of it as being lucky enough not to die." He smirked then, adding, "I suppose other men than me might suggest that this could be destiny."
Tony chuckled. "There have been times in my career that I also felt lucky enough not today. So any word on when we're eventually going to ship off?"
"Not soon enough, I'd say," Leonard replied. "I've been chasing Commander Kane and her team to wrap up the refit works, but unfortunately things aren't going as quickly as I'd like." Matt breathed out a sigh then, as he realised that this probably seem like he was complaining about the engineering and operations teams. "Of course, it has to be done right, and a refit isn't always as simple as merely readying a new vessel. I've just become accustomed to not being docked at a Starbase."
"Anything that you need for me to take of Sir?"
"Just settle in for now 'Commander," Leonard offered, before adding, "I'd like you to consider our shipboard security measures as well, to review our current procedures, and identify improvements where possible."
"Understood."
