A bump in the night

Posted on Thu Aug 4th, 2022 @ 11:39am by Lieutenant JG Kiara Rahl (Jansen-Carey)

Mission: The Lost Brother
Location: Various

Soren walked down the hallway toward ten forward. It was the middle of the night but he found that he couldn't sleep. As he walked past the door he heard someone scream, he pressed the chime but no one answered. He quickly used his security override and opened the door. Now he could hear a child crying and saw a woman in a nightgown in a near state of panic. A small child was bleeding from gash in their head.

"He fell out of bed,'' the woman cried.

Soran ran to the replicator and came back with a large gauze pad. "Here put pressure on it, we'll get them down to Medbay and have them fixed up in no time."

He pressed this Combadge; "Wagnor to Medbay. I'm bringing a child with Laceration to their head and possible concussion."

Kiara was in shift in Sickbay. “Rahl here, Understood Lieutenant, I’ll be waiting.”

He took a bandage and wrapped it around the child's head. holding the gauze in place He looked at the mother who was still shaking. "Now let's get you two to the Medbay"

He spoke with a quiet confidence as he moved to the door. They made their way to the Medbay.

In Sickbay Kiara was waiting for the arrival of her patient she hated to see anyone injured, but for a child it was a frightening matter. When the door opened she was there to greet them.

Soran entered holding the small child, the mother had been struggling to carry her son so he'd taken the boy. He tried to set the boy on the biobed but the child wouldn't let go of his neck, so he sat on the bed with the child on his lap. He wasn't completely comfortable with this but wasn't sure what else to do.

“Hi there” Kiara offered a warm smile as she greeted her young patient. “I’m Kiara, I’ll be taking a look at that knock to your head. It’s nothing to worry about, I’ll have you fixed up in no time!” She offered the young boy’s mother a comforting smile. “Lieutenant would you pass over that tricorder behind you please? I’m sure our young friend here would like to have a look at it.”

Soran tried to shift the boy's weight off of his left shoulder, "It's going to be alright Tyler."

He spoke in a soothing voice as the mother handed the tricorder to Kiara. The boy relaxed his grip and he was able to set him down on the biobed. Soran remained seated beside the child, he wasn't sure why but the child seemed calmed by his presence. He rubbed his left shoulder absentmindedly as it was quite sore.

Kiara noticed Soran rubbing his shoulder, but concentrated on Tyler first. “Here you go Tyler” she smiled warmly as she handed the boy the tricorder. “You can have a look at this, it does lots of interesting things.” She motioned Tyler’s mother to sit beside the biobed as she pulled out her own tricorder. “I’m just going to scan you okay?”

The boy took the tricorder and began playing with the buttons. Soran nodded approval and stood up and found a PADD began to fill out the necessary report.

It didn’t take long for Kiara to check Tyler over, and sort out his head wound. She couldn’t help but notice the distinctive knot that Soran had used, it was obvious he had emergency medicine training. “Okay Tyler, that’s you all sorted out. I’ve given you a little something for the headache you’ve most likely got.” She smiled at his mother. “No concussion to worry about, so you’re free to take Tyler home. Any worries just call.”

The mother smiled, "thank you Kiara,"

The child hopped off the biobed and to hug Soran legs, he blinked and put a hand on the boy's shoulder.

"You're welcome little one," Soran nodded to the mother. "Don't worry about the reports, I'll take care of it. Children fall down sometimes."

"Thank you," The woman smiled as she exited with her son.

Kiara moved across to Soran. “It’s a good job you were there Commander. Thank you for bringing Tyler and his mother in.” She smiled warmly. “Now, let’s take a look at that shoulder of yours, shall we? I noticed you were favouring it.”

"That won't be necessary Lieutenant, " he nodded and moved to leave.

“Hold it Commander!” Kiara stepped a little closer, but not enough to block him. “I only want to help you. Unless you’d prefer I noted it for the Doctor?”

He let out an exasperated sigh, "okay you got me. Can't you just give me a few cc's of terakine and call it good?"

He looked at her expression and shrugged, "it was worth a try."

Kiara smiled. “If you’ll take a seat on the biobed please?”

He went back and sat on the biobed, "I believe the doctor recorded the adjustments he had to make to the scanners for my anatomy."

Kiara checked the records just to be sure. “He did indeed. Now let’s see what’s going on with this shoulder.” She picked up a tricorder and ran it over the area, pausing to tap the screen for an image. “Hmmm Okay, looks like your shoulder blade is slightly out of place. Would you mind removing your clothing so I can touch you? I’m going to need to pop it back into place for you.”

Soran gave her a weary look. He really hated taking his shirt off in front of anyone, medical or not. He appreciated her professional attitude and after a moment he removed his shirt.

"Let's get this over with," he didn't make eye contact with her.

Kiara tried not to show how she felt about the scars she saw on Soran, it was obvious he’d been through a lot. A branded mark on his clavicle, scars on his back, and signs of cuts that had been sealed by heat. She couldn’t help but feel for him. “I’ll be gentle, I promise.” She offered a warm smile as her fingers gently traced across his skin, she smiled at his tattoo of an anamorphic fox playing an instrument. “I like your tattoo, I don’t get to see many.” Her fingers gently rested on his skin as she looked into his eyes. “Ready?”

"Don't worry, I've got a high pain tolerance." Soran explained, "just put things back in place."

Kiara nodded. Applying pressure to his shoulder there was an audible crack as his shoulder went back into place properly. “Quite why that has to sound so terrible...” Kiara grinned. “I’ll just run a scan of that to make sure it’s properly back in place.” She picked up the medical tricorder and ran a scan. “Yep, that’s just where it needs to be.”

"Thank you Lieutenant," So he quietly and inwardly cringed at his formality. "That much better, three surgeries and it's still not right."

He gave her a gentle smile, he hadn't been touched by anyone in a while. It felt pleasant even if it was a medical procedure. He was lonely and this had been a nice interaction.

“It was my pleasure” Kiara smiled warmly as she backed off a little to let Soran dress. As she did so she forgot she’d left the chair sticking out from by the next biobed. stumbling into it she practically plaited her own feet, stumbling back and forward she fell towards Soran, crashing into him they both ended up on the floor with Kia on top.

Soran had caught her, but wasn't able to keep his footing so he moved to break their fall. He shifted their weight so he landed on his good shoulder, he spoke before she had a chance. "I'm uninjured, how about you?

“Ohh I...” Kia smiled. “I’m fine, thanks to you.” She pushed herself up a little before the emotion of the moment got the better of her, and without hesitation she kissed him. Letting it linger for as long as she dared.

Soran blinked and then smiled, he caressed her face brushing her hair slightly and saw a scar on her neck. Her actions made more sense. Still…

"Thank you, Kiara" He breathed. "I should go."

Kiara smiled and backed away getting to her feet. “Of course.” She blushed uncertain what else to say.

He got up quickly and pulled his shirt over his head and gave her a gentle smile. before turning to leave.

Kiara stood wishing she’d let herself get more carried away, but she was on work hours. “It’s been nice getting to know you Soran, any more problems please come back and see me. I’m here all evening.”

"I'll keep that in mind," Soran smiled and walked out.

Smiling Kiara went back to work. It had certainly been an interesting evening.
