Questioning

The Lost Brother
Location: Corridor
Timeline: After briefing
Jordan walked out the hall, as he watched the assistant chief pass him, he walked alongside her. "That didn't go as it should have... perhaps I should remain quiet?"
When Aalis passed Peterson, she wasn't surprised when he fell in line along side her as she walked away from the observation lounge. "Well, sometimes it's good to question orders. Other times?" she posed as a question, "it makes one appear like they are not fit for the position. Unfortunately, Peterson, that's a learning curve for you to figure out on your own. Back there? The initial query was a smart one. The continuation was meh," she trailed off shrugging. "You'll figure it out."
"To be clear, I personally don't have any issue with the colonists... I am from the colonies. I left there to go to the academy."
Glancing over to him, she responded. "Never said you had an issue with the colonists or the colony. The confrontation with a superior officer is something you would want to tame back. I'm offering this as advice. You're young, you're learning. Just make sure that you learn something from that interaction and everything else that you do."
"So what's your opinion of the supplies. The commander never denied them being weapons, only seemed to confirm."
"I don't make assumptions. While I have my opinions, I usually keep them to myself or I bring them up to my chief if I do not agree with what my opinion is after observation. The supplies are for the colonists. We are to try to get them to leave. They will most likely not want to leave. However, even though the relations between the Federation and the Maquis have seemed to improve, there was a time that they were branded as outlaws and were arrested for their egregious acts of violence. While bringing weapons to them would allow them to seemingly have better odds," Aalis went through her analysis of the situation, "it would not do us good to be handing weapons over to them. They are probably already well armed. Now if there were weapons in those crates, then I would think that they would be for us to be able to defend ourselves against them if they decided they didn't want us there. However, in doing that, we are no longer coming in peace to help them. All they would need to do is overwhelm us, take those weapons from us, and use them against us. That's where most things go wrong."
"Do you think it will get to that? I know those people... grew up with them. They just want to live in peace. They are willing to fight. Anyone, and that makes them dangerous."
Aalis went pensive for a moment. "We are allowed our side arm for that reason. I don't think we'll get into an all out brawl or fire fight. We do have the contingency plans to get out of there if it goes too south. Also, we know how to defend ourselves if we need to. All we can really do is to hope for the best while we prepare for the worse with some idea of the options that are in between."
"Looks like I am going to have to rethink everything im told."
Smiling, she added, "'Question everything, learn something, answer nothing.' Euripides. While I am Trill, some cultures know things better than others. This quote I learned a long time ago. You don't have to answer yes to everything you're asked to do. You can question it. Other times, it's better to say nothing at all."
"I found out when not to haven't I... quite possible the worst way."
"Eh, tomayto tomahto," she said borrowing from a human colloquism. "Just as long as you learn something from it, it wasn't the worst way. Worst way is when you go for an encore performance, Peterson."
"Understood Lt. I guess I will go and get ready."
She nodded in confirmation. "As shall I. I'll meet you at the shuttle, ready to go."
