Mission:
The Lost Brother
Location: Ship’s Lounge
Timeline: Current
Someone had seen fit to install a dart board in the ship’s main lounge. Rick, always wanting to try new things, was seeing if he could hit the bullseye… quite unsuccessfully so far.
Aalis was taking a quick break before getting back to work and never ventured far considering her family life waited for her after her work life. Grabbing a sandwich, she saw Rick unsuccessfully throwing darts at the board. She took her sandwich and headed over to the area. "At least I know your phaser accuracy is much better than dart throwing," she joked as she took a seat nearby to eat.
Rick, surprised someone noticed him, let a dart go as he turned his head to see who it was. The dart neatly missed board by about ten centimeters. It thudded against the wall and fell to the ground. “Lieutenant,” he greeted one of his superiors, “Hope you’re having a better day than I am. Seems no one can catch me workin’, I’m only seen when I’m on break.” He shrugged and smiled sheepishly.
"Breaks are necessary," she said while smirking and motioning to the plate in front of her. "Just means everyone has impeccable timing to catch you not on patrol."
"All right Lieutenant, if you say so," Rick ran his fingers through his short brown hair nervously, "Still though... I think the Commander Wagnor thinks I'm a big goof-off."
Shrugging, she finished the bite she had taken of her Mediterranean sandwich. "Most chiefs think that to some extent of all their subordinates. This is one of the reasons why I don't want to be chief. I rather be more part of the team than leading it. Even being assistant was a big enough leap for me." She watched him miss another dart. "From what I've seen so far, I think we need more training in throwing objects," she deadpan the joke as seriously as she could.
Rick offered her a stink eye. "Thanks." He threw his last dart and managed to hit the number six... not on the fair area of the board, the actual number six on it's edge.
Rick shook his head. "I think I've had enough." Checking the chronometer on the wall he found he still had time for a quick snack. He procured a Cuban sandwich and a soda from the replicator and sat next to the Lieutenant. "Well, Lieutenant, here's to goofin' off a bit once in a while." He held up his soda to toast.
She raised her juice to toast. "Goofing off while we can when we can however we can, and then lots of work to make up for it."
"Of course!" agreed Rick enthusiastically. "Maybe if I was seen actually working more once in a while I'd get on more away missions and other cool assignments," he wondered out loud. "Whatcha think?"
"I could always arrange that for you," she teased lightly. She knew his logged hours; it was just a perception thing that he had and apparently the chief had. Then again she had one of those chiefs before that was unnecessarily difficult, even though she didn't see Soran that way.
"Could you?" He leaned towards her enough for her to hear, but not enough to make things awkward. "It would be a big help, I think."
She was all serious when she replied. "Deal," she said and then she smirked.
Rick sat up straight, and looked around suddenly alarmed, "Aw shit," his eyes met hers, "I just made a deal with the devil, didn't I?"
She finished her sandwich as he asked the question and shrugged her shoulders. "Maybe. Maybe not. I do know that I could best you in darts."
Rick rolled his eyes, "At this point beating me in darts is no mean feat."
"You should practice and we can call a game," she offered. "Well, I need to get back to it."
"All right then, sounds good. I'll practice... but I'll get back to work first. Say, next week sometime for the game?"
Smirking she disposed of her glass and plate. "When you feel you are ready to take me on, let me know." She winked.
One side or Rick’s mouth turned upward into a slightly sly half-smile. “You know I can’t turn down a challenge Lieutenant. I’ll let ya know when I’m ready.”
Aalis did know that, as she was the same way when it came to challenges. "Sounds like fun. Enjoy the rest of your break, and I'll see what I can do about some changes for you."
