an admiral in sickbay

Posted on Thu Feb 2nd, 2023 @ 12:57am by 1st Lieutenant Kayleigh London & Lieutenant Commander Rutherford (RJ) Milton

Mission: Traitor amongst us?
Location: sickbay

Wain was tired from the journey. He hates this, being so weak and being treated as an invalid. He hated being in hospitals even more at the mercy of doctors. Hell he did not want to die in a sickbay. He had always imagined dying in harnass on a ship somewhere. That last couple of years that had proved to be impossible as his health had been bad. Wain had been a senior lecturer at the academy. Although he loved teaching youngsters, he missed active command.

"Sweet, I am going to check on Tasin and Nick." His wife said and kissed his cheek." Denise knew that he did not want her hovering. The doctor would have all the information already and she could always talk to him more later. For now it was better if Wain met his knew doctor alone.

Pix flew slowly towards the new man, the woman tending him had ventured away and something from his 'vibrations of ambient emotion told her he could use a friend. she approached him laterally so he would have time to spot her, the uneasy emotions flowing off him had negativity, the way he lay there and just the expression showed a lot of the story, if one really looked.

Stopping close to the Biobed and being sure he had eye contact with her she smiled, trying to be polite and keep well out of his personal space without permission she gave him a small hand wave and waited to see what the man thought of her before doing anything else.

Wain blinked, then blinked again. "Oh gods, I am losing my mind as well now."

"That is little Pix trying to say Hello." Milton came into view. "She is the unofficial welcoming committee of one." Moving to the bedside. "I am Doctor Milton, but you can just call me 'Doc' as everyone does."

"Fascinating." Wain said having more eyes for Pixie then the doctor. "She's a faerie?" He had grown up with the old celtic stories of the little people. And this diversion also kept him from having to face the doctor and his state of health.

"About as close as I think you will find actually." He checked the monitors.

Pix felt a small bit of wonder; the warmth of a child like something that added to her glow as she hovered over to land on the bedside where this man could get a better look. Making a contact with his gaze she curtseyed then smiled brightly. Her expression helped to give the impression of 'Pleased to meet you' as much as is possible without words spoken.

"She understands everything." Milton admired how Pix is so good at taking focus upon her and way from him as he used the probe quickly. "If she could talk the stories she might tell, like where she came from?"

Pix put a hand on her cocked hip and stare up at Milton with a 'Really, that again' type of expressive face and stance. "She really likes being around people so she usually hides at the mention of her plaace of birth, calls the ship her Home." Milton concluded.

"Right you are my lady." Wain said. "You tell him off when you don't like something. And I am at your service. When I feel a little better I will write a song for you." It had been years since he had felt well enough to sing but Wain had never given up hope.

Pix glow brightened as she clapped her hands to the sound of bells as she spoke her gratitude and smiled to the Admiral. SHe looked to Milton, he had completed his checks so Pix pointed to him to alert the Admiral Her Rutherford had something to pass along.

"Well my friend." Milton said calmly. "We both know your situation and I am going to do some extra screening; I am a Xeno-Biology expert and if you compare the Humanoids the similarities between them can give some hints on improving health slightly." He said while grinning at how taken the Admiral is with Pix. "Of course Pix wishes she could do the Fae magic of Earth but she is not from there. She is a good listener and delights in being a companion to people in sick bay while I run a few panels to check your enzyme levels and a few tests of your current Output is with your heart." Kind of gauge where we can go?"

"Slightly." Wain managed a wan smile. "I know I won't get any better doctor. The best I can hope for is to be allowed to continue as a professor at the university and not put to pasture completely.

"Deterring the decline is a good goal, maybe even a slight tip towards being able to stick around to pass along that wisdom of yours longer." Milton pointed out. "Even congestive heart failure is not the death certificate it used to me. " Milton explained. "We know more about the heart than just about any other organ in your body, the knowledge will help make you standard of living better, have a bit more energy, it is just a bit of getting more "Output percentage from you heart. You might be surprise what 5 or 10 percent output will do for you. May not seem much in raw numbers but for standard of life it can be significant."

"You must have read my file that it is not only my heart. I am prone to strokes as well. Damn shuttle accident. So how long do you plan to keep me here. And do you plan to do more to me while I am here?" He tried to hide his fear.

"About that." Milton pulled up a stool to come closer to his patient. "Strokes are affected by the heart also, micro blood clots that block veins or blood vessels in the brain like a blockage does in a heart attack. Realistically if you have heart troubles you are more prone to strokes." Milton explained. "You must have been told that?" HE made eye contact before he spoke. "Now that means both are dependent upon blood flow from the heart, to put it in a way you can get some comfort, while the heart muscle is not as strong as it could be that does not mean you cannot improve, We keep you on a consistent blood flow; good steady heart rate can do wonders and put less strain on your heart."

Pix was nodding agreement with Her Rutherford, she seemed to understand as well what he said.

"Now I need to get your blood flowing so to allow your heart not to be so strained pimping blood. Surges and Irregular beats can cause the iron in your blood to clot and thus the troubles you have had. Give me a little time to balance you blood flow and heart rate then maybe you might feel better and get some more life back into that body of yours. At the least not deteriorate as quick and allow you to keep teaching and such. Can you give me that time?"

He nodded. "I guess I am not going anywhere, doctor. But I have to warn you that I have been told I am a pretty bad patient."

"didn't you know?" He asked with a sly Grin. "Doctors are the worst patients." Soft bell chiming could be heard as Pix laughed at how true that was, she was around when her Rutherford was wounded... once.

"Yeah. I am married to one." Wain had to smile. "And my daughter as well. I know what you mean. Fair enough, let's give it a try, doctor."

Pix's glow grew a bit as she clapped and twirled just above the bed side.

"I will do my best, promise." Milton confirmed. "But your wife , should I share what I am doing, the patient confidentuality is serious with me. If you want I tell her we are working and not any more than normalfamily member?"

"You can tell her everything, we usually do not have secrets for each other. Doc..." He got pensive. "Can you tell me about my boy, Tasin? Will he walk again." That was the one thing that worried him more than his own health.

"I can tell you without any fear of repercussions that I am doing all the research that I can and there are options yet to explore." He nod. "Pix is quite close to him and will be there for him all the way through his time under my care." He explained. "We are running tests that tsrget a scan on each bit of the nerve cluster and there is still unknown factors that can make it possible as a long shot; but the diagnosis is he cannot walk right now but I have not given up hope as yet." He shrugged. "That is the best I can give, I will ask Talsin if he will allow me to share with you and your wife who can understand more what is the medical data, that is the best I can do."

"Thank you." Wain said. "For all you are doing, doctor." The conversation had made him tired. "Do what you can for him. It is more important than my life. It is good to hear that Pix is helping him. She is remarkable." He kept back a yawn.

"She is amazing, that's for sure." Rutherford said with grin. "Looks like I have kept you up a little late, have a good nap, I will check around later." Rutherford took his leave.

Pix matched the Admiral's yawn and decided it was a nice soft place for a nap and lay down, Closing her eyes and she was fast asleep. Her soft blow pulsating with her breathing
