Mission: Traitor amongst us?
Kay was fuming outside the captain's office. When Tony had written to her the past few months she had the impression she got along well with the captain and there wsa mutual respect there. That they may even be friends. She could not believe how t he captain had treated her friend and career or not, she was going to give him a peace of her mind. So she hit the chime, waiting to be let in.
"Enter," Xavier called out, he suspected who was on the other side, and sighed, and sat straight, awaiting for her to enter.
Kay came in did a picture perfect salute and then came to attention in front of the captain. "Permission to speak frankly, sir!"
Leaning back, he gestured to the seat. "Wouldn't have it any other way."
She continued to stand. "With permisiion, sir! What the hell! What has Tony ever done to you!!!! You are destroying her by firing her!!!"
"I relieved her of first officers duties, I did not fire her... I reassigned her duties, at the moment, they are temporary until we can figure out what is going on with her. I cannot in good conscience have a first officer who doubt their abilities, that can be a liability."
"She listened to what your second officer told her." Kay fumed. "Tony was told that it was not responsible to continue working if she was not 100%. So she was convinced not to take any risks in case she made a mistake an people died and you are punishing her for it? What kind of a ship do you run!" Boy she was even madder than she had thought. Nobody endangered her friend, nobody. "She just needs to know you believe in her, especially now."
"If she is not 100%, I totally agree with her not working, she has been through a lot... her family. Look I have nothing but the utmost respect for her, and know she can do the job. Something... is not right with her, and until we find out what is going on... then... I have to think of the bigger picture, and think of the lives on this ship."
"But you fired her. She said you did and it is killing her." Kay shouted.
"I reassigned her to assist with the colonists." Xavier replied maintaining a calm tone.
"Bullshit. I know that Lieutenant Jansen offered to put her on medical leave which would have saved this going on her record. You relieved her as first offiicer and hinted that it could be permanent. You wrecked her career after all she did for you. You disgust me."
"Yyou are entitled to feel that way. But my actions do not change the fact that I do think she belongs as xo."
"But you did not make that clear to her and she thinks she has lost her job and your support." Kay shouted.
"She insisted no keep working, I thought her having the duties as XO would add to her worries. There are no hard feelings with her, nor is this going to be going on to her permanent file. Officially I am supposed to, but given the fact that I wouldnt be here without her, I owe her that much..."
That made Kay calm down a little. "And don't you forget it. She is going to need all of us to pull through this. So you had better make it up to her. Right now she thinks that you have given up on her."
"If she feels like that, it is unintentional. If I had given up on her, I would have removed her completely."
"She thinks you did." Kay said.
Sighing. "In time she will know why i did what I did. In her condition, I doubt she will believe anything I say."
"You could at least try."
"I have not been avoiding her."
Kay just growled.
"Avoiding means going out of ones way to not see a person. I haven't had the chance to talk to her."
"I hope you do so soon and put her out of her misery.... sir." She had completely forgotten she was talking to a senior officer.
"On my list to do."
"Good." Kay came to her feet. "Thank you for letting me vent, sir. I know I have an attitude problem."
"I honestly haven't noticed." Xavier replied. "Your concern for your friend is admirable. And appreciated."
"Thank you, sir." She came to attention again and saluted.
"Dismissed." He replied as he turned back to the task at hand.
