Calling The (not so) In-Laws

Posted on Thu Feb 24th, 2022 @ 7:10pm by Lieutenant Commander Diane Doctrine & Captain Xavier Carey

Mission: Free write
Location: USS Resolution
Timeline: current

Xavier sat back in his office which was located in his quarters, he had promised Drex to do him a favour, and that was up to him to even start. With a quick background check of his second officer, which now was acting XO, there was still deliberations as to whether or not she would fill it officially. He had found the two guardians of the child. the parents of her deceased. It didn't take long before he had arranged a video call between himself and the two.

"Who is calling may I ask?" The woman on the other end of the line peered into the screen with a look of suspicion and distrust.

"This is Captain Xavier Carey, Commanding Officer of the USS Resolution, Galaxy class starship, often referred to as the luxury liner of Starfleet." Xavier replied as he leaned forward. "Its top of the line, safe, and we have many families onboard living without fear. I was wondering if you would care for a tour of the ship. We will be heading to Starbase 375 for resupply, and can pick up there."

The woman's eyes narrowed a bit more. "Why are you offering this to me?"

"Promise me an open mind and I will explain."

"If I am listening then my mind is open," she replied as if her word was the final word, "I am listening."

"I have an officer onboard that you know, that under good authority has a child currently under your care. Being your grandchild, I understand that you lost your son to the fleet."

Now her body language changed completely. Her eyes narrowed to mere slits, "This is true," she answered slowly.

"My second officer and chief intelligence officer, Commander Diane Doctrine is on board, and although she has not informed me of any of this, I heard it through the grapevine. Of her child, and the situation regarding your son. Being a father myself, I cannot fathom losing my child in any capacity. I was wondering during if you would consider being my VIP guests on the ship. Due to special requirements of my marital status the captain's quarters are free for you to use."

In the background a male's voice was heard, "Martha, who are you talking to?" Now, both could be seen on the viewer, "Who's this?"

"He's the captain of Diane's ship Emil," she replied.

A hard expression come over the man's features, "The Diane that killed our boy?" He looked right at the screen now, "What do you want?"

"To be fair the job killed your son, not Diane. You lost a son, she lost her love the father of her child. They both signed up for a job they knew was dangerous even moreso than most Starfleet jobs. They knew the risks. If you want to know someone who killed their family. I killed my father to save innocents. Diane and your son gave their lives for that exact reason. I'm not asking you to forgive nor to forget you son. Your son loved Diane, and loved you. Do you really think what you are doing to Diane is what he would have wanted."

Both at them stared at Xavier over the comm connection for many seconds.

Martha put her hand on Emil's shoulder, her expression softening, "Emil," she said quietly, "he's right... and you know it."

Emil's expression did not change. "Why are you calling us now?"

"She has only recently been serving under me, and although she hides it well, I've been notified by fellow friends of Diane, a Captain in the Klingon defense force. To try and see if we can help. If a Klingon Captain wants to help. Then you listen."

Martha looked to her husband, "It wouldn't hurt to let Toby see his mother. He has been asking about her more and more recently."

"Fine," Emil agreed and stomped off.

Martha looked into the screen again, "I think Emil will come around. I... had a feeling something like this would happen. Captain, it's not a bad thing, it's just hard for us. That's all. Please send word when we can expect to be picked up."

"We are headed to Starbase 375, two days, think you can make it?"

She nodded, "I believe we can... and if you don't mind." Martha allowed a small, mischievous smile, "Don't tell Diane. I'd like to surprise her with a visit from her son."

"I haven't told her I was looking into this."

"I see. Very good. We'll be ready in two days time."
