Lieutenant Commander Diane Doctrine
==Her Quarters==
Toby insisted on getting his own pajamas on without help. Diane, realizing she’d missed a lot of his development over the last four years, left him to dress himself for bed.
She walked into the main area of their cabin and started checking up on some things on a PADD as was her habit in the evening before going to bed.
Toby came toddling out a few minutes later dressed for bed. “Hey ma, can we play with Pix again?” He asked with drowsy eyes.
Diane patted the space on the couch next to her, inviting him to sit there. “Oh, I think that can be arranged.” Toby climbed on the couch and snuggled with his mother. She set her PADD down on the table next to the couch and stroked her son’s hair out of his eyes. “You two certainly did a lot of running around today.”
“It was fun mom. I din’t know starships were so big on the inside,” he replied sleepily. “You and Docter Milton liked dancing wit each other. Are you in love?”
Diane pursed her lips in thought for a moment before answering. She couldn’t help smiling widely as she answered, “Well kiddo, It’s waaaaay too soon to tell if I’m in love or not… but I do know I’d like him a lot.”
“He seems real nice, ya know?” Toby suggested.
“I know,” Diane answered as she watched a gaping yawn escape Toby’s mouth. “You’re lookin’ kinda tired there kiddo, how about hoppin’ into bed?”
Toby at first looked like he wouldn’t agree then he yawned again. “You might be right ma. Tuck me in?”
Diane nodded affirmatively and they walked into Toby’s room.
She tucked him in, kissed him goodnight, and figured he was fast asleep by the time she reached the door. She turned and leaned against the door jamb. She watched Toby sleep and thought of how lucky she was that they were reunited.
Suddenly she realized how tired she was now. Diane went to her own room and stripped off her uniform. She threw on some comfortable pajamas and went to the head and performed the before bed rituals.
She went to her own room and sat on the bed for a moment. On the nightstand was a small globe. It was about sixteen centimeters in diameter and looked to be made of glass, but when picked up it projected holographic images of past events. A holographic photo album if you will.
The particular images this one cycled through were all of Diane and Toby’s father, Rick.
Images from their first dates, shenanigans at Starfleet Intelligence, vacations taken, Diane’s pregnancy with Toby, and Toby’s first year.
Diane tried to hold back tears but could not.
She wept softly at the memory of Rick and the fantastic relationship they had with each other. As the tears streamed down her cheeks an old song flitted through her mind…
Woke up to the sound of pouring rain
The wind would whisper and I'd think of you
And all the tears you cried – they called my name
And when you needed me I came through
Paint a picture of the days gone by
When love went blind and you would make me see
I'd stare a lifetime into your eyes
So that I knew that you were there for me
Time after time you were there for me
Remember yesterday - walking hand in hand
Love letters in the sands - I remember you
And through the sleepless nights, through every endless day
I wanna hear you say, "I remember you."
We spent the summer with the top rolled down
Wished ever after would be like this
You said I love you babe, without a sound
I said I'd give my life for just one kiss
I'd live for your smile and die for your kiss
Remember yesterday - walking hand in hand
Love letters in the sands - I remember you
And through the sleepless nights, through every endless day
I wanna hear you say, "I remember you."
We've had our share of hard times
But that's the price we paid
And through it all we kept the promise that we made
I swear you'll never be lonely
Woke up to the sound of pouring rain
Washed away a dream of you
But nothing else could ever take you away
'Cause you'll always be my dream come true
Oh my darling, I love you
Remember yesterday - walking hand in hand
Love letters in the sands - I remember you
Through the sleepless nights, through every endless day
I wanna hear you say, "I remember you."
Remember yesterday - walking hand in hand
Love letters in the sands - I remember you.
Through all the sleepless nights, through every endless day
I wanna hear you say, "I remember, I remember you!"
Yeah, I remember you Rick… I’ll never forget… but now… now it’s time for me to move on… I’ll always love you… you knew that…
She missed him so much but there was nothing left to do now except move forward. She had known this for a long time. Now that she was reunited with Toby, it seemed as good a time as any to finally start moving forward with an aspect of her life that had been on hold.
She set the globe down and went back to the head. She dried her eyes and cheeks and washed her face again.
Recomposed, she went to Toby’s door and checked on him one more time. Satisfied she hadn’t woken him she retreated to her own room and slipped into bed to sleep.
