Class Room Visit

Posted on Fri Oct 14th, 2022 @ 8:26pm by Lieutenant Commander Diane Doctrine & Lieutenant Commander Aalis Rinne

Mission: The Lost Brother

Soran sat at the desk looking over reports when the door chimed. "Come."

Lt Boucher stepped into the room, "Sorry I just disturbed you Sir, but I was instructed to remind you of your appointment this morning."

"I believe my time is better spent here, why don't you or Lt Rinne handle it." Soran asked.

"The point is for the children to meet the new security chief Sir, that's you." CJ grinned. "Now Lt Rinne can handle the staff meeting and I'll take care of the cargo inspection."

"I'm not good with children," Soran said.

"Then why do my niece and call you Uncle Reny?"

"Because you and Biff told her to." Soran spat.

"Only the Uncle bit, she came up with Reny on own.Tell you what you're supposed to be in that classroom in ten minutes and yes fifteen minutes from now all I'll alert you of an urgent security matter." CJ shrugged.

"Ok I can manage that," The Angosian got up and headed out to the lift.

"What kind of urgent security matter are we going to have?" A fellow officer asked.

"I'm not gonna disappoint those dear children," Boucher smiled. "Besides Lieutenant Jansen told me to be sure he showed up."

Aalis had been at her desk and came over to see what was going on. "What'd I miss?" she asked.

"Commander Wagnor is going to give a talk to Ms. Lokaii's class, she wanted the kids to meet the new security." CJ explained. "iHe was hoping I'd give him an out but I promised we can't Jansen I'd make sure he showed up."

The Assistant Chief smirked. "I'll give him some time. That way he shows up, and is there for a bit, and then I'll give him an out. I know that my son was looking forward to his visit today. Let's get to the staff briefing. I'll end it early, don't worry."

Soran stepped out of the lift and moved toward the classroom. 'If CJ doesn't pull through for me, he'll be scrubbing the brig cells with manual brush.' He thought. He took a deep breath before entering the room.

The teacher was in the middle of a lesson when Soran walked in. She was a Bolian woman named Thell Lokaii. She smiled at Soran and told the class, "Well, look who's visiting today class. It's our ship's new security chief." She looked out to the children, seated in their desks, which were arranged in a circle around the room, "This is Lieutenant Commander Soran Wagnor. Can we say hello to him?"

"Good morning Commander Wagnor," they all intoned nearly in unison.

Soran maintained his neutral expression as he looked out at the children, "Good morning children."

Most of the children seemed uneasy and shifted in their seats. 'Come on CJ,' he thought. He noticed Toby close to the front of the class, the only child who was meeting his gaze.

Miss Lokaii asked, "Would you be willing to talk about your role here on the ship Commander?" She was trying to get her class familiar with the senior staff so the youngsters would be able to trust them especially during a crisis on the ship.

"I am in charge of the safety if this ship, It's crew and it's passengers." He stated simply.

"What if the crew or a passenger break the law?" one of the young students asked.

Miss Lokaii was a little taken aback by one of her students speaking out of turn but she let it go. It was a fair question. "Seth here hasn't been aboard the ship long. He's still figuring things out with the Starfleet ranks and such. His parents are civilian scientists." she told Soran.

"If someone breaks the law it is duty to detain them until they can be brought up to the proper authorities." Soran explained.

"That's it?" Seth asked.

"Yes," Soran said.

Seth furrowed his brow deeply, "Somehow I thought it would be more exciting than that."

"Real jobs are often boring,'' Soran explained. 'If CJ doesn't call soon he'll be micro cleaning the biofilters in brig sonic showers.' he'd thought.

Miss Lokaii hemmed lightly, "Maybe we should talk about safety... some more. Perhaps you can explain what to do in certain emergencies happen on the ship?" This was not going like she thought it would, she smiled hopefully anyway.

"Safety's real important... that's what my mom says," Toby spoke up confidently, also out of turn.

Miss Lokaii tried very hard to not roll her eyes and managed it.

"What emergency are you thinking of?" Wagnor asked. He didn't want to get blamed for scaring the children with all the things that go wrong in space.

That opened up the floodgates. Questions were fired at Soran from all sides. Maybe these kids were smarter than they looked?

"What about explosive decompression?"

"What about a shuttle crash?"

"What about a warp core breach?"

"What about introoooders?"

"Mind controlling aliens!"

"Or a giant space hand that squeezes the ship!"

"What if we run out of air!"

"What if the whole ship crashes! AHHHH!"

Through the onslaught of questions Toby just sat and shook his head as if he was in a class full of amateurs.

'CJ's going to be scrubbing those biofilters with a toothbrush' Soran thought. He took a deep breath before answering.

"Troops this will not do, if I am to answer your questions we will have order." Wagnor did not raise his voice, simply with authority, he knew he had to take control of the room.

"Now raise your hand and I will acknowledge you and answer one question at a time."

The class calmed down. Several of the students put their hands up.

Soran picked one. Frida, a red-head most likely from a Terran colony asked, "How likely is a warp core breach? And are we just suppose to run to the saucer section?"

The Angosian took a moment before answering the girl, "A warp core breach is a very rare thing. If there is a problem with the ship, The crew, a teacher or your parents will tell you where to go and you must listen."

"That doesn't sound exciting at all," another student commented.

Toby rolled his eyes, "My mom says there's long times of nothing punctuated by short times of everything happening at once."

Miss Lokaii could see Toby's comment might start some unruliness. She really didn't want the class acting up in front of the new security chief. "I happen to think you're all getting worked up just a little too much. Many of these disasters you're upset about are, in fact, rather rare on well up-kept Starfleet vessel like this one." She looked to Soran, "Isn't that right Commander?"

'I'm going to make CJ clean those bio filters with his own toothbrush' Soran thought. Still… "This young man has a point if the children are concerned, we can talk about it."

"Can we talk about the giant space hand?" Susie asked, "My mom told me, back in the twenty-two hundreds somewhere, a giant space hand grabbed the Enterprise and captured it!"

"Her mom is a historian," Miss Lokaii informed Soran.

"That's interesting I don't think I've heard about that particular event, Did your mother tell you how the enterprise handled that event?" Soran asked.

"They had to go down to this planet," Susie went on, "The theory is they were captured by a Q before anyone knew who the Q were. Captain Kirk outsmarted him."

"I see our officers are aware of history so we would consider that and come up with a plan, I doubt that would happen again." Soran answered.

Toby raised his hand and Miss Lokaii acknowledged him, “What if mind controlling aliens control you. Being in charge of the security of the ship, what protocols are in place to counter rogue officers?”

"First off my mind is difficult to control, we do have protocols for rouge officers. That information is classified," Soran said calmly and made a mental note to have a conversation with the mother. "I'm sure your mother has told you what that means. For the rest of the class classified means secret."

The whole class moaned sadly in unison to show their disappointment.

Soran nodded to another child who was waving his hand and moving up and down in his seat.

"What about space pirates?! What if they beam on board and…"

Soran raised his hand and made a song with a throat. "Space pirates don't attack ships of this size. If there are ever intruders, I and my department will protect you. Listen to the adults and we keep you safe."

He spoke with quiet authority as he looked out at the children. 'I'm gonna make that boy scrub the biofilters with his own toothbrush!'

Miss Lokaii, suspecting Commander Wagnor might want to talk about something else, positive perhaps, decided to try and change the subject. She 'ahemed' to get the class' attention, "Well class, I think it's safe to say in the event of an emergency, listen to your parents or other security personnel, or even other officers in charge. They will certainly help you out. Are there any other questions about security that don't have to do with disasters? Hmm? Anyone?"

"My older brother keeps taking my things. He doesn't ask permission. Can you arrest him?" Bradley asked after raising his hand.

"That is a family matter, young man," Soran said. "Have you tried talking to him about it?"

“He doesn’t listen.”

"What things does he take" Soran asked.

Bradley sighed. "Mostly my model ships."

"His bother is kind of a dick," a classmate added.

"Mister Foster," Miss Lokaii admonished, "What have we said about that kind of language?"

Duly chastised, he muttered a small sounding, "Sorry."

"Perhaps you try building a model together," Wagnor suggested.

Bradley looked confused for a moment as if he'd heard the silliest idea ever. "That kinda makes sense," he said at last.

The Trill in the back raised his hand, when there was a moment of silence. His mom had harped patience and to wait his turn when it came to things at school. That and he liked to watch things like she did. When the security chief nodded for him to go, he asked. "We get field trips from time to time. Would it be possible if we could do a our size version of the security training obstacle course?" While he had asked his mother that this morning before school, he really wanted a shot at it and she said that she would need to ask for permission.

Quietly in the back, Aalis slipped into the classroom halfway through Lonén's question and smirked at her son's persistence of wanting to go after it. She was going to ask the chief after the staff meeting that she just concluded. He just beat her to the punch. As much as she had no problem creating a kid friendly version, it wasn't something that she was just going to do as their training course on the Resolution was one that they had built themselves and had it as widely kept secret.

"That sounds like a good idea," He smiled seeing The Assistant Chief sitting in the back of the room. "I think I assign that project to Lieutenant Rinne."

She nodded as she had a PADD tucked into her arms for the Chief to get him out of the room before it got to be too much, considering their previous conversation. "Understood, Sir," she said as she pushed off of the wall she had been leaning against and walked towards the front. "Does anyone have any other questions? Some thing's come up and I need to borrow the Chief." She smirked so he knew that this was the rescue he had been waiting for.

"Oh yes," Wagnor said taking the PADD, "I've have an important meeting to attend."

The kids were quiet. Aalis turned to lead their way out of the classroom. "I hope you guys got your questions answered. Otherwise, you can give them to the teacher and we'll answer them in kind."

The teacher motioned before they left the front of the classroom and the class said in broken chorus, "thank you!"

"You're welcome and children," Wagnor nodded .

She smiled as they walked down and to the back of the room to leave. She winked at her son as they walked past.
