Welcome to the Department

Posted on Tue Feb 2nd, 2021 @ 11:58am by Lieutenant JG Diana Morrison-Johnson & Lieutenant Sky Jansen-Carey

Mission: The Mentarin Effect
Location: Counseling Office

Making her way to the Counselling offices Sky paused outside the door of the Assistant Chief Counsellor, being the new Chief she needed to introduce herself. Pressing the chime she waited for an answer, not wanting to walk in just in case there was a Counselling h session in progress.

Diana had been going through some case recordings from a previous session when she heard the chime. A bit startled, she figured that there would be some free time before the next appointment. But at times people made it habit to just show up announced looking for advice or simply to just vent. "Come on in."

Walking into the office Sky smiled warmly. “Lieutenant Morrison, I’m Sky Jansen the new Chief Counsellor. I thought I’d drop by and introduce myself.”

"Wow," Morrison said standing from her seat. "I had no idea that you were coming on board. Had I known, I would have met you at the transporter. Please have a seat. Can I get you anything to drink?"

“Thank you” Sky smiled as she walked across to a seat. “A fruit juice would be lovely, I don’t mind what flavour.” She made herself comfortable. “My arrival was pretty rapid to say the least! They had to do a rolling transport to get me onboard. I’m just grateful Tuscadero was working the transporter. He’s very skilled and very sweet.”

Diana replicated two grape juices and handed one over to Sky. "I haven't the chance to meet Tuscadero yet. But I have been hearing some good things about him. So when did they let you know that your getting transferred here?"

“I had a week’s notice fortunately, gave me time to say a proper goodbye to my friends and prepare myself properly rather than having the usual rush to prepare!” Sky smiled before sipping her grape juice. Once she was done she placed the glass down on the table. “Have you been aboard the ship long?”

"I arrived before we shipped out," Morrison answered. "The majority of the original senior staff had accepted new assignments. But most of the original crew had stayed. Its a crew here from what I have observed thus far."

Sky nodded. “I hope none of the crew will mind having a half Romulan Counsellor.” She offered an uncertain glance. “The distrust of Romulans seems to run pretty deep in some and others generally don’t care, or at least that’s how I’ve found it to be. I don’t mind earning people’s trust as long as they give me a fair chance.”

The Assistant Chief Counsellor interest definitely peaked. "A half Romulan in Starfleet. Sounds like you have lot of stories to tell in regards to your life. What's the other half?"

“Betazoid” Sky grinned. “It’s not a common mix but I’m lucky in that I don’t look that Romulan besides the ears! One reason why I keep my ears covered a lot.”

"I assume most people assume your part Vulcan with the ears. So where did you grow up? Not too many places in the Federation where a Romulan can raise a family without wondering eyes."

“I spent my early years on Betazed, developing my abilities early meant I needed special training. I was in and out of hospitals and institutions quite a lot when I was younger. I never knew my father, my mother never spoke of him and I stopped asking when I realised how unhappy it made her.” Sky shrugged her shoulders. “Speaking of my abilities, I’ll warn you now, it’s best not to make physical contact with me. Touch tends to initiate a telepathic surge, it pulls me into another’s mind. I have gone around wearing gloves before now just to avoid accidental contact.”

"Never heard anything like that before in regards to Betazoids," Morrison replied clearly shocked. "Assuming that's just skin to skin contact?"

“It has to be constant contact for a certain amount of time to make a full connection. It gives me one hell of a headache too.” Sky smiled.

"I'll be sure to keep a pair of gloves around for a medical emergency. So have you been by your office yet?

Sky nodded. “Yes I have, I just need to get it set up how I like it and it’ll be perfect.” She smiled warmly. “I like creature comforts and to make my patients comfortable too.”

"Your going to be seeing a lot of patients here," Diana brought up. "This ship has a crew with a lot of families members. It keeping me busy quite a bit, which I like."

Sky smiled. “I’ll be only too happy to help. I like working with children as well, I’ve always been a natural where children are concerned. I’d like a family of my own one day.”

"Hoping to get there myself sooner than later. "I'm not getting any younger."

“I completely agree with you there!” Sky grinned. “Why is it men always think you want to rush into these things? They can breed well into their later years where as we women only have a finite amount of time to do so!”

Diana burst out laughing. "You need to bring that up to my boyfriend."

Sky grinned. “I take it your boyfriend isn’t keen on the idea of having children when you are?” She looked at Diana curiously.

"Honestly we haven't discussed it," she admitted. "We dated years ago and broke up due to different assignments. Recently got back together two ago."

Sky nodded. “It’s good that you’re giving your relationship another try though. I met the love of my life when I was at the Academy, we were together for two years but then he was assigned to a ship and we lost contact. I’ve always wondered if things would be the same between us if we met again.”

"We both had done some serious growing up while apart. Life is funny like that I suppose."

“It is indeed” Sky nodded. “When you’re young you’re carefree but as you get older you become ... for want of a better word more ... seasoned, I guess. You’re older and wiser.” She grinned.

"So what about yourself?" Diana inquired. "Any family?"

“Just my mother, brother and the usual hoard of relatives!” Sky grinned. “Both my mum and Lucas are in Starfleet.”

"Both my parents past away two years. Took sometime off from Starfleet to help my brother settle their estate and handle family business. My parents definitely left some huge shoes to fill."

Sky nodded understandingly. “I don’t know who my father is it’s always been just the three of us.”

"Have you ever considered searching for him?" Morrison asked.

Sky shook her head. “No. It’s unusual to say the least, a Betazoid and a Romulan having a child. There’s a history there but as my mother has never spoken of my father I’m guessing it’s not a good story. I have no wish to make my mother unhappy by asking.

"Good point."

“Anyway I guess I should be getting back to my office, there’s a pile of PADDs on my desk already waiting to be looked at.”

"They wasted no time getting you to work," Diana chuckled. "Guess we'll talk more later."

“I know! Astounding how much work piles up on desks seemingly from nowhere.” Sky grinned. “Actually I think a lot of it is just reports giving me a heads up on the sessions that have already been conducted to date, no doubt I’ll find out.” She smiled as she headed for the door. “Nice meeting you, we’ll talk again once I’ve settled in and oriented myself better.”
