“Unwelcome Memories”

LtCmdr. Diane Doctrine
Intelligence Officer
USS Resolution

After leaving the captain’s ready room, Diane made a beeline to her quarters to pick up a few things. As she briskly walked memories of her last away mission came unbidden into her mind.

That particular last one did not go well at all. If only Rick would have followed the orders instead of taking matters into his own hands… he’d still be alive.

That was three years ago.

Diane entered her hastily assigned cabin. There was only one piece of luggage on the floor of the living area. It was a travel trunk that contained her personal belongings. She pulled out her special boots and put them on. Then she changed from her black intelligence uniform into a command red one. There was no need to advertise her job in a hostile environment. Diane didn’t want a target on her back if the enemy wanted hostages.

Then she grabbed an old fashioned messenger bag that contained a few items that may be useful. Her hands caressed the leather as she remembered the last time she used it.

With a determined look on her face she slung it over her shoulder and checked the charge on her phaser. Satisfied she holstered the weapon and made her way to the shuttle bay.

She entered the already occupied turbolift. A member of the security team was inside.

“Going on the away mission?” he asked.

“I am,” Diane replied outwardly pleasant despite the turmoil she felt inside.

Noticing she didn’t have any armor he offered, “I’m sure they’ll have tactical armor for you in the shuttlebay. It’s been suggested we all wear it on this mission.”

“I know, thanks.”

“You’re… new aboard, aren’t you?” he asked.

“Sorry, I’m Commander Doctrine. I work in intelligence.” Diane answered.

“Petty Officer Rick Jones,” he offered his hand. “Welcome aboard.”

She stiffened at the mention of her former lover’s name but for only a half-second. She smiled then and shook his hand. “Pleased to meet you.”

The lift doors opened and they entered the shuttle bay. “I gotta grab a couple things. I’ll see you on the shuttle.”

Diane smiled. As she headed for the shuttle she inhaled sharply and put those unbidden memories away. Now it was time to get to work.
