Interview - Sky Carey
Posted on Mon Nov 17th, 2025 @ 7:05am by Commander Antonia 'Tony" Stoffels & Lieutenant Sky Carey
Mission:
Those who are left behind
Location: Counsellor’s Office
Returning to her office Sky motioned for Voss to have a seat, deciding to sit on the sofa instead of her usual interview chair. “Let’s get this over with, I hate having to do this but at least it'll save any future questions. Hopefully anyway.”
Felix smiled. "It's your job. Do you have regular therapy and supervision sessions, sky? You mentioned something about a tough period recently.”
Sky nodded. “That’s right, I suffered a breakdown of sorts. I was kidnapped and tortured, when I came back I wasn’t in a very good place. Commander Stoffels took it upon herself to be my Counsellor. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be here now. As for regular sessions I have them if I need them, as per regulations.”
“I understand that it makes you grateful towards the commander. I had already read in the reports that she has done the same for your husband in the past. That's a hard bond to break, between a therapist and a patient."
“It is” Sky nodded. “But I try not to let it cloud my judgement. As Chief Counsellor I have to keep my role free of my own personal feelings. Professional detachment isn’t nice, but it’s a requirement of the role.”
“I would say it's the hardest requirement of the role and the loneliest. I haven't done much ship duty during my career, and I don't envy you being so isolated on a ship. It's understandable that professional rules do get blurred or you would go crazy. But it is moments like this that it is very difficult to determine if someone is detached enough.”
“Isolated? In a way I guess” Sky nodded. “But I’m not alone. I have family, friends, and colleagues here. I know that my being married to the Captain is another bone of contention considering we just had twins as well. Starfleet tends to be wary about assigning families together on ships, stations are one thing, ships are another. I hope we’ve proved that we’re professional when it comes to our duties.”
“I think it is a very healthy thing to have family along on ship duty. And I have always advocated it. My problems are more with counselors usually keeping their distance from clients, on a ship that's just impossible. And that must make your job here so much more difficult. When I have therapy sessions with colleagues serving on ships that's usually a big concern. I am glad to hear it's not a problem for you."
“Well it’s not the easiest, but I’m not your usual Counsellor. I like to have that connection with people, it helps with trust and benefits my patients. I like to be open and honest with them.” Sky smiled. “Yes, it hurts to know that those I care for are under investigation, but I wouldn’t allow that to cloud my judgement.”
“you mention that a lot, about your judgment." Felix really hated this part of his job, but at the same time he owed these people to do it well, it did not matter if they liked him or not. “it is my experience that people do that when they are not completely sure."
Sky nodded. “Perhaps, but if I’m not sure about something I make a point of making myself sure about it.” She offered a smile. “I know how to cover my bases, I was top of my classes at the Academy and in my practical classes. Plus being an empath helps as well.”
"Impressive. But you must know that you only learn to be a good therapist by doing it." He smiled. "And you have had it rough lately with your own mental health and then giving birth to twins."
“That’s true” Sky nodded. “I’ve only just returned to my duties, it’s a learning curve right now, but one I’m enjoying.”
"To be honest I think that you should have regular counselling sessions yourself." Felix said a little blunt. "after all that has happened to you in the last year I am a little surprised it was not recommended."
“With the threat of war, and everything that’s happened I think Counselling sessions have kind of taken a back seat” Sky offered. “But I don’t let any problems linger, I wouldn’t be a very good counsellor if I did.”
" again I don't agree with you. I think the mental health of the crew is more important than ever in times of war, and you and your department have a very important task to fulfil. But it will be hard and you as well, so personal therapy an indivision are very important right now for your mental health.” felix was very serious.
Sky nodded. “Then I will arrange regular sessions for myself, no point in arguing about it.” She offered a smile. “If you wish to arrange someone to do that it’s fine, or I can arrange my own.”
"Good." He offered a warm smile in return. "And I trust you to arrange for your own. I think that is all I needed to know, unless you want to talk some more?"
“No, I’m good” Sky offered a warm smile. “I will arrange for an appointment and any follow ups as deemed necessary.”
