The Mentor

Posted on Fri Apr 17th, 2026 @ 12:56am by 1st Lieutenant Kayleigh London & Lieutenant Commander Tony Johnson

Mission: Those who are left behind
Location: Security

Ensign Gregory Turner stepped into the security offices. Not too long ago, he was informed that Lieutenant Kayleigh London was to be his mentor. Honestly, Gregory didn't feel the need for a mentor. And in a strange way, it felt weird having a marine as a mentor. All he knew about her was that she bounced around between security and counseling. The word around the lower decks was if she still was technically a marine. Other rumors going around was that she was someone from Internal Affairs to serve a spy and report back on other officers. Spotting the Lieutenant, he walked over. "Lieutenant London."

"Ensign Turner." Kay came to her feet and stuck out her hand smiling. "Nice to see you." Now she was demoted from running security she did not have her own office anymore and that sucked. "Shall we walk an talk?" She suggested.

Accepting the hand, Greg returned the smile. "Yes, ma'am."

Kay was nervous and not sure how to start the conversation so they walked in silence for a bit before she started. "Commander Johnson has asked me to mentor you. Has he told you about it?"

"I was informed this morning when I met with him," the Ensign responded. "Not really sure what that entirely entails."

"Me neither." The marine admitted, "I have never done anything like this before either. So maybe we can learn together?" She had been on the strict side when she ran security for a while, but had not seen much of Turner then.

Raising an eyebrow, he gave a nervous smile. "Not sure how to feel about that."

"But as you know I have led the security department for a while. So I guess there is a bunch of stuff I could teach you or help you with. I know I had a lot of questions after I finished my training and I was afraid to ask my superior officers because I thought they would think me stupid."

"Can I ask a question?"

"Sure that is why I am here." Kay was relieved that he was asking something to be honest.

"What is the goal for me here, studying security from a Marine or am I learning how to operate like a Marine?" Greg inquired.

"What do you want the goal to be?" Kay asked. " I can do both as I have been in security for a while now. But I can certainly teach you which marine skills come in handy when working in security. Or are there other skills you would like to get stronger. Like reading people. I am a shrink as well as you know."

Gregory took a moment to think about her question. "I had no idea that you were also a counselor as well. Spent the last four years at the Academy training to be a security officer. But I would be very much interested in learning how to read people and marine skills would be helpful as well."

"Good then that is what we will be focussing on. I have found it extremely handy to be able to read people. Of course it depends on the species but even vulcans can have tells." She grinned at him.

"Really now," the Ensign replied, clearly surprised by this revelation. "Could have used that against my Vulcan opponent back in the Academy. Forcing me to land in second place in my boxing match."

Kay laughed. "Trust me, I have plenty to teach you."

"Looking forward to the lessons."
