Mission:
The Mentarin Effect
Location: Security Chief Office
Timeline: After You're the New Assistant Before Away Team
Commander Tony Johnson had been sitting at his desk going over the staffs records. After receiving a message from Lieutenant Carey regarding the Assistance Chief of Security position and how she felt that Lieutenant Rinne should be considered for the spot. He honestly wasn't one to remove someone from a position, especially when he believed they were doing a good job. But Talsi was adamant about him taking her request into consideration. After going through her service record, Tony requested for Aalis to meet with him right away.
Aalis had gotten the request for her to come to the Chief Security Officer's Office, and she figured it had to deal with the fact that she was now his assistant, since Lieutenant Carey had vacated the position for her to take it. It wasn't like she was nervous about it, as he was still her boss regardless of the new position. So far working on the Resolution was something that she was enjoying, even if there were more surprises around every corner it seemed. "You requested to see me, Sir," she stated, as she came to the open office door.
"Yeah, Aalis have a seat please," Johnson spoke. "As your aware Lieutenant Carey requested that you take you fill the position as the Assistant Chief of Security. So I been taking a closer look at your record. You have had some very diverse assignments."
"The beauty of being a security officer, Sir, is that you can find a job anywhere," she mentioned as she took a seat across the desk from him. "My husband had the pick of assignments, and once our son came into play, we did more what we thought was necessary for him. Interestingly enough, the Borg have made us reevaluate our lives more than once, which is more than we had to in any other case." Her hands became folded in her lap as she crossed her right leg over her left leg and leaned back in the chair slightly. The Borg tried taking both of their lives at Wolf 359; it's where she became ever changed with Rinne as her symbiont. The attack on Sector 001 was another incident that made them realize that they were naïve to think that they were safe at Earth home sector.
The Commander smiled and nodded. "Actually I was just reading that in your file. I was at Wolf 359 myself, so I can understand firsthand the need for a change of scenery. Spent the next three years at the Utopia Planetia Fleet Yards part of the development team for weapons and tactics."
"Too many people were there, and thankfully a bunch got out. Sadly, not enough before it was over. We may have crossed paths then as we moved back to Earth Sector for his gig at Jupiter Research Station. Living on Mars was nice, don't get me wrong. But hopping from Mars to Earth daily and then him from Mars to Jupiter, we made it work, because we had assumed it was safer. The Borg making it to Earth proved us wrong, yet again," she laughed lightly. "That's when we figured well, if it can happen there, might as well as be on the move. We got lucky when both a team lead position and a weapons engineering specialist opened up. Galaxy classes allow families. It worked out. Wasn't expecting Assistant Chief so soon, to be truthful," she commented. "She gave me an argument I couldn't win."
"Talis can be quite convincing," he admitted. "So in your opinion why do you feel that its too soon for the position?"
Aalis was pensive for a moment before she responded. "While I can lead a team and command a situation, I've never really wanted to be stuck behind a console doing work. I'm one that likes to be in the thick of it, in the field so to speak. It is also one of the reasons why we are back in the field. Running security with diplomats for a couple of years was enough and I missed seeing all the different worlds. It's not quite the career path I was going for; with that said, I'll embrace the change. I'd say if it is alright with you, that we call it a temporary position. If I work up to your expectations and I do enjoy it, we can talk about making it permanent. Then if I decide I rather be back as a squad team leader, then I'll remain your interim assistant until you can get a replacement. How does that sound, Sir?" It wasn't the responsibility that she wanted away from. She enjoyed getting her hands dirty and in the thick of everything. The further one got promoted, the more paperwork there was.
Tony across the desk at the Lieutenant. Honestly he respected nothing more than someone willing to get their hands dirty. Sitting behind the desk nonstop was for old people who had been worn down by the job. "Let me ask you what is you ultimate career goal?"
"Honestly? I never thought of anything other than being a security officer. I know I could branch out and go upwards like to tactical/security, Marines or Intelligence; none of them sound interesting to me. Especially with Lonén now growing up, I'm more of a mother first, then a security officer. I like it that I can be near my family while working where as other branches could/would take me away from them." She realized that she had painted herself as a cog; she really did enjoy being a security officer.
"Have you considered actually running security eventually?" Johnson brought up. "I certainly don't plan on being here forever. Someone has to take my place at some point. Fairly certain that you don't want one of these new folks becoming your boss at some point."
She shrugged. "I don't know. I haven't decided yet. I guess I'll just have to wait to see how I like to be your assistant for now and then maybe we can recontinue this conversation about leading security at some point in time," she smiled warmly as she talked about it. "I really hadn't thought about it; as much as I am a leader and don't mind being in charge, I'm not a huge fan of managerial type roles."
Tony couldn't help but to chuckle. "Unfortunately managerial and paperwork come with the job. But congratulations on your new role Aalis. I believe your going to do a great job. Any questions?"
"No questions, not at this time. I'll probably think of something here soon, and will let you know. Just send me any assignments you need me to work and what duty shifts you would like me to cover on the bridge, assuming that's part of the assistant role and all," she laughed lightly. "Anything else you needed from me, sir?"
"Not at the moment, I'll let you get back to work."
She nodded and excused herself to get to work.
