Patient discussion

Mission: The Lost Brother
Location: Sickbay

{ON}

The morning after events with Nick, Sky had called together Tony, Soran and Rutherford to discuss a treatment plan for Nick, it was obvious she couldn’t handle him alone. She sighed as she looked in the mirror at the bruised face and neck she had. It looked like she was going to have to ask Rutherford to sort the bruising out while she was there.

Heading out to Sickbay her first stop on arrival was to look in on Nick. Pausing by the window of his isolation room she wasn’t surprised to see him asleep but she was surprised to see Soran still there with him.

Soran woke with a start, He saw Sky looking at him through the window He put a finger to his lips and then got up and came to the door.

"He's resting, I don't expect him to be up for an hour or two," He said in the doorway, He looked to the guard on duty. "If he wakes he's not restrained, "Come and get me don't let anyone else into the room including medical personnel."

Sky offered a smile giving Soran a little wave.

Carrying on to Rutherford’s Office Sky popped her head around the open door. “Knock, Knock” Her voice was still a little hoarse as she spoke, she offered a smile. “Apologies for the early morning meeting.”

Milton looked up from the report from the biomonitor.

"Tut tut, just making a check of things." He replied with a grin. "Will transfer data and be right out."

Tony came in she too showed her battle scars of trying to restrain her brother. Her nose was one big purple bruise. "Oh Sky." Tony said looking at her friend. "I don't know what to say."

Sky said nothing at first but instead offered her friend a hug. “You don’t need to say anything Tony” stepped back giving Tony her space. “You weren’t to know Nick would be like this, it’s not his fault.” She motioned to Tony’s nose. “How are you feeling?”

"Numb, scared. Nick is one of the sweetest people I know. Honestly. Ren knows him as well. I don't know what they did to him, honestly."

Sky nodded. “All he said to me was that he wanted to die.” She sighed. “That’s why he attacked me, he wanted security to kill him.”

Tony almost started to cry again. "I know. I probably have the most experience here in working with highly traumatized patients. But I can't work on my brother."

Sky offered an understanding nod. “You don’t have to, I will. I’m not giving up on him just like that.”

Tony nodded. "And I would suggest a cocktail of drugs. Anti anxiety, sedatives, maybe anti-depressants. I don't know if he is psychotic." It brought back memories of so many patients. But that also gave her hope, there were two men on this ship she had seen in a not much better state and they had been brought back from the brink.

Soran came in got a coffee from the replicator and sat next to Tony and took her hand. "He's resting Tony we had a good talk."

"He talked to you? I am so glad." She squeezed his fingers. "I have to tell my mother something."

Sky looked at Rutherford. “He’s your patient Rutherford” she paused to take a sip of drink from a bottle she’d brought with. “What do you think?”

"Medically I have a good regiment of medicines to help control the pain factors and keep the good stuff for his healing" Milton reported. " The cocktail is out of my realm of expertise aside from checking them for negative reaction to my prescriptions."

Sky nodded. “Well let’s see how things go, he’s got a long road of recovery ahead of him psychologically speaking.”

"yes that is why I think you should put him on some drugs for now. Until we can get him the help he really needs."

"Or maybe we should spend time with him and let him know that we're here to help. Rather than drug him up." Soran said.

Tony felt a bit of annoyance but swallowed it. Something she would not have done before. "He gets aggitated the minute I walk in the door. And do you have enough personel to keep guarding him day and night? My brother has enough training to know how to kill himself."

"I have plenty of staff," Soran said. "He trying to end his pain not his life."

“Ren is right Tony, Nick is only trying to escape the pain he’s in.” Sky offered Tony an understanding gaze. “He’s desperate.” She looked at Soran. “Desperate can be unpredictable Ren, just be careful.”

"Hello! Who is the trauma specialist here." Tony was slowly starting to lose her cool. She had once lost a patient exactly this way in the beginning of her career because she had listened to his pleading that he did not need drugs and she would be damned if she was going to lose her own brother that way.

Sky bit back the urge to snap back at Tony, her own moods influenced by her hormone flooded body thanks to her pregnancy. “I know that Tony!” She sighed. “It seems you have the bases covered here, I’ll be in my office if I’m needed.” With that she headed on her way.

"Can he at least speak to his mother before you start doping him up?" Soran asked.

"He doesn't want to see his mother or me. Right now seeing her might make him worse." She threw up her hands. "Why is it so hard for you guys to take my advice!"

"Do you want him to trust you?" Soran asked. "Because pumping him full of drugs without his consent isn't going to achieve that. The first doctor I dealt with at the federation hospital almost killed me with those drugs."

"I gave you drugs those first weeks you were in my care. Not to hurt you, but to help you. To help you cope with your emotions and feelings until you were strong enough to do it without. Why do you all think I want to hurt my own brother. Don't you see he could die! I could lose him and it would be my fault."

"His fate is not in your hands Tony, whatever happens will not be your fault. He needs to make a choice to get better. I chose to let you treat me, I think he'll choose to be helped too. " Soran looked her in the eye. "We have to show him his choices."

"He can't make decisions right now." She felt like screaming. "His brain is not working right it is sending him all the wrong messages. He needs help seeing clearly. Choices will come later, he will get choices. At this stage it is just a fight to keep them alive. I can't lose him like I did William."

"I don't know who William was, but reasoned with Nick last night." Soran said calmly. "Fight the battle in front of you, not the one that's passed, isn't that what you told me? I'm not saying don't put him on drugs, I'm saying don't ruin your relationship with him by not giving him a choice."

She sighed and suddenly felt so tired. "Alright. You talk to him then, you and Sky. Explain to him..." She shrugged her shoulders. "But keep him alive, Ren."

Soran took her in his arms and kissed her on the cheek. "I'll do everything in power to help him."

Tony trembled in his arms. "I am so scared to lose him, Ren. He is my only sibling and I love him to bits."

"Would anyone like 'The Country Doctor's' opinion?" Milton asked. "It is not as though I never saw someone traumatized by injuries and such." Milton was surprisingly stern in his observations of this all. "Yes the man is at an extreme, but we can rely upon Sky; and her Betazoid heritage and gifts' to get a feel for the patient in her care. I am monitoring his Medicines intake and reactions also so if the 'Cognitive' functions are affected I would step in and take the matter up." He crossed his arms and almost glared. "I tend to like less invasive chemical use, the man needs to heal and as you so quickly used a stereotypical view of counselors and Doctors 'Doping' people up, you might give us a chance to prove we know our jobs?"

He took a breath to calm himself.

"My patients are my life, I took a creed to do no harm, I am a healer at heart. Not withstanding you are Pix's BFF Tony, I would do my all for everyone in my Sick Bay and you usually know that, so please just trust me and SKy that we have the best intensions and will bend over backwards to help. But you have to give us a little trust." He winked to her. "And know that Pix would rat us out if we did any less."

"Fine." She said. "I will trust you to do the right thing for my brother and I will but out. Just keep him alive that is all I ask."

"I always seek to keep my patients alive and improve their health where I can Commander." Rutherford replied gently. "It is what I live to do."

Meanwhile in her office Sky was staring out the window into space, for the first time ever she was struggling with how to help a patient.
