Mission:
The Mentarin Effect
Location: Planet surface
Timeline: Current
Tal and the group rematerialized, after making sure that she materialized fully, as well as her comrades, she looked her surroundings. Right where they were supposed to be. "Looks like science worked."
Diane was looking around for trouble in case it cropped up. Her phaser was holstered but she was ready to pull it out if needed. "Its been my experience it usually does," She replied to Tal in a half serious, half mirthful.
Milton glanced about and took in a long breath then exhaled slowly and his face was distaste. "Is it me or is recycled air filter a bit better on the lungs?" He asked casually as he took out his Tricorder. "Thick humidity and some residual scents one related to industry." He noted as he began a scan. "I think I would like to see some of those affected... sooner than later if you do not mind Commander?"
"Engineering is making scrubbers that will be placed in the atmosphere," Marisa said. "That's the first step. We hope you and the others will help come up with other ways to clean the air and water."
Sky stood looking around, she was feeling like something of a spare wheel for the moment. She had to admit the air quality wasn’t the best, recycled air aboard the ship was cleaner than this air.
"Science always works!" Amelix exclaimed at Tal. "We just don't understand it all yet! I'm convinced that religion and science are really one and the same thing. One is just shrouded in mysticism and the unwillingness to learn how the universe manifests! It is really cool when you think about it! Maybe this is why I'm called 'the bridge' back home." She shrugged. "I don't know. It never seems to be as easy as I think it will be."
"And I am convinced you are in error on that assumption," Marisa countered, overhearing Amelix. "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." The quote from Shakespeare was appropriate for the conversation. "I've seen many things that cannot be explained by science, and many things of science that are later proven false."
"Don't bother," Vanessa said quietly to Marisa. "She'll believe whatever she wants, regardless of centuries of understanding to counter it."
Marisa just shook her head. "Too bad her mind is so closed." She turned to look around.
"Honestly I am shocked that the health of the people on this world isn't far worse," Diana Morrison spoke.
It was one thing to see it in a report. It was another to experience it first hand. Karatek could feel the pollution in the air with every breath. At least with the scrubber they had been working on, the problem would be greatly reduced. Though it was a quick fix which required a more long term solution. As soon as he had took that first breath, his concentration switched to the thought of what happened to the previous captain. He was shot by a sniper. He didn’t know the circumstances. But it was possible troubles was ahead again. Karatek looked and scanned ahead in search for any vantage point.
When everyone was there, Marisa raised her voice just loud enough to be heard. "Okay, everyone, let's see what we can learn." They each had their orders from the Captain to start with.
"Things are never as they seem at first glance when people are sick." Milton pointed out. "Nor is there one quick solution for a chronic problem; at least until one finds the source of the outbreak." He pointed out. "I am going to check those who are effected and get a better feel for what we are really dealing with, be it medical, science or technology, this will be solved with everyone's knowledge an help." He shrugged. "SO no one's mind is closed and at the beginning all points of view help." He winked and gave a grin. "Be well as I need to visit a hospital."
Amelix coughed as she inhaled the pollution. She looked up to the sky and could not see anything. "We need to send the scrubbers to work, now." She started feeling very tired and visibly yawned as she continued to inhale the bad air.
"Are the scrubbers ready to deploy?" Tal asked.
Stifling another yawn, Amelix replied in an unusually subdued fashion. "They were ready before we got down here. Just activate them."
"Are you all right, Doctor?" Marisa hd never seen the science officer looking...tired.
Vanessa went over to the chief. "Can I help you with anything?"
"We will be starting to deploy the scrubbers as soon as we verify exactly where they will be the best use. We do not have enough to cover the whole planet and be effective but we can target an area and get things moving at least.". Said James flatly through the rebreather. " Once they deploy we can activate them at that time say in probably 4 to 6 hours time.". He added
"So... are they ready or aren't they?" Tal asked, heating two different answers from two different chiefs made things confusing. "Getting them here right now would be the best use"
"Ma'am they are ready to deploy we just do not know where to deploy them yet. That is one of the reasons I am down here.". Said James flatly
"I was under the impression they were going over the inhabited section of the planet and that there were enough scrubbers to at least lessen the polution," Marisa said.
Vanessa turned to Amelix. "Didn't the computer diagram where they were to go?"
"Huh? The computer?" Amelix asked, feeling more lethargic. "Yes, in the atmosphere, of course...."
Vanessa took out a rebreather and gave it to Amelix. "Use this. It will help."
Amelix took the device and utilized it. However, nothing changed in Amelix's demeanor.
Vanessa scanned the Chief. "Is it a lack of light?" she asked, looking up. "I didn't think it was gloomy enough to cause you to get sleepy."
"Hmmm?" Amelix asked. "Oh, um, well, maybe that with the pollution. Prevents the warmer air? Makes my system sleepy, perhaps...."
"Let's get you inside, then, shall we?" Vanessa asked, taking Amelix by the arm.
"Why don't we contact the ship, have Tuscadero beam them into position." Tal replied, it was this... miscommunication or disorganization that could break the cohesiveness of the team, and they had just beamed down. "He has the locations to place them doesn't he?"
"They're in the science computer if he doesn't," Vanessa said. "But since he helped work on the probes to help us transport down here, he should have access."
Karatek looked at the confusion unfolding. There were too many things going on at the same time so they didn't had time to organize a senior staff meeting for each aspect a department wanted to bring forward and it certainly led to having one or two department not on the same page. "Actually Lieutenant Jackson, we ran simulations as to potential locations. However, there were information missing to be able to determine a definitive set of locations, information we could only get here. Once we have completed the two scans, this will determine which of the scenarios is the best. Would you like to assist us conducting these scans?" said Karatek, showing the padd with the tests they had to conduct.
Goda Bhalet looked back at the group as he monitored their surroundings. All this science stuff went over his head and he was eager for them to do what needed to be done, so they could return back to the ship.
Vanessa wasn't sure what was going on in engineering. When she and Amelix met with the Chief Engineer, there was a definite plan for the number of scrubbers and their placement. Now they needed scans from the planet, too? And then she remembered that the Chief Engineer never came back to get the placement. She sighed. "I will send it to Tullly to get them launched. We'll need to do something more here on the planet."
Marisa went over to Vanessa. Sotto voce she asked, "What was that about?"
"We calculated the number of scrubbers, and how far apart they'd need to be. We gave that information to engineering, but never sent the exact placement. We were expecting that information to be sent to the transporter chief, along with the scrubbers. I guess there was a communication failure somewhere. I should have followed up."
Marisa nodded. "Okay. It can be easily fixed, as long as the scrubbers are ready to go."
Tal looked around from what she seen there was a small crowd gathering, although they did not seemed pleased, they weren't hostile. Yet anyway. "We have company."
Rick Jones tensed up as he observed the Mentarins gather. He made no moves as he waited for instructions from the senior officer of the landing party.
Diane looked up from her tricorder, "The natives appear a little restless. Perhaps we can get one of those scrubbers nearby to start working?"
"The scrubbers will be placed in the atmosphere," Marisa said quietly. The intel officer wasn't familiar with their purpose, but there wasn't time to explain right now. She tapped her combadge, grateful that the initial seeding and probes were working. "Sandoval to Tuscadero. There's been a bit of a mixup. Can you deploy the scrubbers as was arranged with science and engineering?"
Standing at a console, the transporter operator wa happy to oblige. His fingers began to dance across the controls like a masterful pianist amid a concert, and he was ready to give the performance of his life. "Two shakes of a lamb's tail," Tully replied and locked onto the scrubbers and dispersed them to the arranged coordinates.
As soon as he knew the transport was successful, Tully brought his hand towards his lips and released a chef's kiss. "Beautiful," he said and leaded down to plant a kiss of his reliable transporter console. "Transport complete, scrubbers should be deployed as desired."
"Thank you, Mr. Tuscadero. That was most appreciated. Sandoval out."
She turned to the others. "The scrubbers have been deployed. It will take a bit of time to do their job, but there should be noticeable change in a few hours."
"The hospital is down that street, while the mine is outside of town." Rotush replied looking down the street.
"Uh," Rick was trying to get the other's attention, "These people are still gathering. This crowd is getting larger."
"Then I say we split up, the more we cover, the faster we get to." Tal replied, it was purely a security point of view. But it was the best one at the moment.
"Agreed." Marisa was still concerned about Amelix and her reaction. "I'll take a team into the mines. I suggest Doctors Milumad and Jackson go with medical. Commander Doctrine can lead the team."
Aalis knew she was good wherever they needed to be. While her pension for not wanting to get eaten alive by insects was a hesitant factor, she had loaded up on antihistamines before she left the ship on the away team. She was good to be here. Close quarters were better for her though if something was to go awry. "I can take the mines."
Marisa nodded. "Okay. Let's go."
